Does anyone know if it's possible to navigate the liffey from Lucan into Dublin City by any type of light boat? It's a wonder more people haven't tried commuting by motoised boat into city centre...

There's a weir at Islandbridge. If you're happy to hop out and pull the boat over it then it's possible.

There's also one at Lucan, Wren's Nest, Chapelizod... :)

I looked into this before when I lived in Islandbridge ( just below the last weir on the river so it was possible ). Anyway your problems would only begin at low tide- have a look how low the river gets around Hueston Station- less than a foot deep in places, in other words not deep enough to be safe with a propeller.
I calculated the tides and you could have done the trip approx 8 hours of every 12 if lucky.
Next prob is where to park it. O'Connell bridge has steps from the river up to street level but DCC told me that as far as they knew it wasn't permissable just to leave a boat sitting there moored all day. In either case I reckoned it would get nicked or vandalised if you did.
Another option was Dublin City Moorings further down the river. Only thing there is they charge about €120 per week so too expensive. At that point I gave up, shame though, could've been fun:)

Could maybe do it in a canoe? :)

    Good luck heading upstream ;-)

    Definitely possible in a canoe/kayak downstream. http://irishwhitewater.com/river_guide/river.php?id=246

Any reasonably fit person would manage upstream, as long as they were prepared to walk around the weirs. (some of them would be tricky)

    Hovercraft for the win.
Weirs would be awkward though since many don't have an easy bypass.

    Islandbridge at the boat clubs
    Chapelizod upstream from the bridge
    Chapelizod broken weir
    weir opposite the Anglers rest
    wrens nest
    sluice weir
    Lucan village
I think there is one at Celbridge
and then there is a dam

Actually a hovercraft would be a better bet along the canal but you'd have to port at each lock, the lough and quay pub in Clondalkin is on the ninth lock (hint in name as to how many times you have to wait for traffic ;) ) and another one or two depending on where you intend to it

on the north side you have a lot more locks , it all depends on where you want to end up in town. Hovercraft can travel on roads , but small ones aren't that good in a collision and mpg would be a killer so big road tax too.

going upstream in a canoe would not be an option for the average person if there is any sort of flow on the river
