this might seem silly but what would be the advice regarding the wearing of socks whilst running. Do people always wear them or wear a specific material or is there even a need for such a question and just wear what the hell you want?

Good socks are really important. Bad ones will shred your feet.

If you're asking in the context of a triathlon, I'd be a socks wearer. Unless you've got zoots or a tri specific running shoes that won't have inner seams, it just doesn't seem worth the risk of grating your feet over five and missing out on training for a week or two for the sake of a few seconds. That said, my times are never going to be such that I'll be missing out on a podium place due to one or two seconds so it depends what your priorities are.

I used balega socks. They're fantastic. I buy them when ever I'm in Chicago or get someone to do a sock run for me when they're over. I'm sure you could get them posted over here though.

I can't speak more highly of the 'Sole Anti-blister' socks. I used to suffer from pretty bad blisters as a result of running, but after getting these my feet have been fine. They are comfortable to wear and removes any friction between the sock and the runner, I think it's because it has a dual layer of material in them. Wouldn't use any other type or brand from now on.

I got mine in the Edge Sports Shop on North Main St in Cork, but am sure any decent running shop would have them.

I'm with Trotter Inc on this one. I just picked up another 2 pairs this morning..........I now have nearly more pairs of these than regular socks which is starting to worry me. I find their sizes small (I have size 11s and wear their size 13-15 socks).

Good point there, I'm only a size 8 and I found them to be small fitting too but presumed that was part of the design.

I paid approx €17 for 2 pairs down here in Cork. Must check online to see if they can be got cheaper.

Folks any ideas where i can find these socks in Dublin? Asked in a few shops and all they say is 1000 mile socks. Ended up getting the Ron Hill socks in Arnotts. Also found nothing on the net. Thanks in advance

I'd suggest calling the Edge Sports shop in Cork and ask them if they'd send you some. They have an online shop but I can't see them listed there.

    Could be worth a try...

I picked up a pair of the 1000 miles in Runways a few weeks go, but mine are the knee high type..Only wear them the odd time but find them very good. Will pick up a few propper pairs this weekend...as some of the looks i get are funny.

    I'm missing it as well!

You can get them in the uk from a company called sandpit

    http://shop.sandpit.com/index.php?cPath=3&osCsid=cf651d371d3afede7db2f1a32ba5fa80

I've bought from both (The Edge didn't stock them). They are more expensive on the uk website so a call to the crowd in cork would be worth it. They'll post them up no problem (I'd say).

Thanks trotter inc, i rang the sports shop and had a chat and they are now available on their website and can be found if you do a search under 'sole'.

As for the joke bit, i'm a bit lost by it too.

Think 911sc thought the poster was recommending a shop in Cork to someone based in Dublin. Maybe didn't catch the website bit..

Anyway - I'm going to give the "soles" a go. Did 10.5miles tonight in a new pair of 1000 mile socks and still got new blisters...

Irish Fit in Dun Laoighre have the sole anti blister socks in stock - I dropped in yesterday got some. Ther're €26 for two pairs (bit more expensive than other shops I think).

Did a 10 mile run last night and had no irritation of the existing monstrous blister I picked up in Connemara so they seem on first use to work.

Wow! A good bit more expensive, am sure I only paid €17 for mine.

Am I the only person on here to be using cheap old sports socks - the ones you find in a basket near the checkout? €5 for three pairs or something? Never a problem with blisters. Maybe, like with my worn-out runners, I'm just lucky :)

No, I use the same €5-for-three-pairs socks on my easy day (~4 times a week). On the "workout" days I use fancier stuff like 1000-mile or Hilly socks. I haven't had a blister in about 3 years.

    Same as me.

And in a spirit of experimentation I placed an order earlier today for a few pairs of Injinji crew socks.
    Should be interesting.

Let us know the results of the experiment then. Cat & pigeons if you get a blister from the posh pair :pac:

I'm a cheapskate - it's either Penneys womens sports socks or Lidl/Aldi's finest in a size 6-9. I'll probably buy a pair or two of Hillys if I decide to train for the marathon this year though.

I'm currently looking to buy some "proper" socks, I don't suffer with blisters and I was wondering what people recommend for irish summers?

    (sorry for hi-jacking)

Well, the results are in and they are good. They felt very strange initially but I quickly got used to them. I'll be pushing out my distance on my longer runs until I get to 30Km and they are ideal for this. It's unfortunate that there is no local outlet for these socks - U.S., Canada and Spain (all in Spanish) is all I could find. I believe that a UK online store is due in the near future.

For anyone looking to buy Sole anti-blister, was onto the Edge Sportshop in Cork and they (Sole) are redesigning the socks at present and the new ones won't be out until September so they won't be getting any new ones in til then. Of course my size are all gone :( so had to get black ones. Never liked black socks for sports, always think of work with black socks

I use bog standard puma socks (very short, and thin) for training and they suit fine. I have a pair of 1000 mile ones, but couldnt see a huge difference with them. The only ones I cant use are the thicker sport socks with higher ribbed ankles, they wreck my feet.

The only ones I would recommend hugely I cant remember the name of :p, they have x-cell written on them. I got them in mysport.ie. Theyre thick, designed to be warm, I used them for most of my hard winter runs, including tough guy, and my feet love em. Not a blister in sight, and if your feet get wet, these help.
