If you had the option to:

    Keep your Job

    Or...

    Go Travelling...

    ?

Go travelling everytime. You'll either not come back or come back a better person. What does your job do for you?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,382 ✭✭✭petes

Keep the job until I had saved enough to go travelling.

Well nothing is ever that simplistic. I would love to go travelling but have commitments. Had I no mortage or other bills to pay, had I a job to walk into upon my return then yes I'd go travelling.

But it just isn't as simple a choice as you put it OP.

Depends on what the job pays.

Take a leave of absence and go travelling then come back to the job. 2 birds, 1 stone, bang, bang, dead.

(Yes I do live in the fantasy world of gumdrops and pixies where the likes of this is possible :D. I suggest you try it. All you do is take a little tab of acid and...)

having financial sense its better to keep the job. You can go travelling during your work holiday hours when you want to.

If you have no responsibilities (kids, house, debts etc), I would say go travelling.

If on the the other hand you're burdened with a house, debts and kids. I would stay put.

Could you hire a guy who looks like you to do your job, as you, for 90% of your salary? That way you could pocket the 10% and go travelling. Best of both worlds. Of course, your doppelgänger isn't likely to be too close a match, so he'll likely have to field some tough questions in the early days about why he's a foot taller, newly bald, different race etc.

I'm in the same boat as you. Heading away for a year in July. Go for it, in twenty years time you'll regret not doing the travel thing more than being on the dole for a few months when you get back.

I'm trying to make this decision at the moment! Have an ok job, not 100% sure about its security. Have about 10k in savings. In May I will finish a qualification which, in theory, should secure me about an extra 5 or 6k a year but I know it's not going to happen the way things are at the moment.

On one hand, I want to stay here and keep working while I can, plus my parents have offered to financially help me out in getting a mortgage at the start of next year.

On the other hand, I want to do some travelling before I settle down. I need that money in savings to go travelling....but I also would need it to go towards buying a house!

I would probably regret it if I reach my 30s and never did the whole travelling thing....but I would also regret it if, in 7 or 8 years, I still don't have my foot on the property ladder.

    :confused::confused::confused:

There is no probably about it, you will regret it later in life if it's something you want to do.

There'll be plenty of time to buy a house. How well is the property ladder working out for people who bought in the past few years? If I had listened to my parents i'd be up to my neck in debt for a ****ty negative equity apartment. Finish your qualification and head away.

Yeah think thats a good call. Although temptation is always there to take the lot! I have about 10k - well i will if i go in June like planned. I reckon ill take the lot though :-D I wont be selling my motorbike like i planned. Last thing i need when i come back is the depression of the bus to go along with everything else!!!

Ideally I'd like to do both. Enjoy myself for a few months in South America/Asia and then go somewhere where I could get a job to keep me going.

personally if i was going travelling id bring 6 k and allow another 4 k in your case 2 as emergency work your way around, id save up the cash for your tickets and do it that way.. if you have transport keep it..
I just do odd jobs on my way around the country live carefully depends where your planing on going to

I faced this question at the start of the year as my GF wants to travel. Fact of the matter is I could afford to up and leave and see the world but I do want to come back and this is not the economic climate to be leaving a secure job to swan off around the world.

I'll keep my regular income and check out the world during my holidays. Makes more sense to me.

If you'd just stuck to the plan and picked some who looks like you..

If you haven't gone travelling yet you should do it. I don't see the appeal in having a mortgage hanging over your head especially since the end is nigh.

Yeah well we were looking at Buenos Aires to fly into. Then go around SA. Fly Chile to NZ - then to Oz and Asia. You'd need a fair whack of cash though if you're not working! How long you going for?

11 months. Have the flights paid for, just need to get vaccinations and insurance sorted out.

Have a fair bit of money saved up, should have enough to see me around anyway.

I think you can get by on €5 a day or less. If you could budget for €10 a day you'd be sitting pretty.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,053 ✭✭✭BornToKill

Well, if it's any use to you, I did that. I did just like the song and 'left a good job in the city' at 28 and went off to see the world. There have been one or two occasions since when I half kinda thought about it in a 'Sliding doors' way. I'd definitely expect to be earning more and be further up the ladder if I had stayed where I was. But, y'know what, I wasn't happy there at the time - I wanted to go away and see and do things. So I suppose the bottom line is that it depends on your priorities and it's all down to what is most important to you.

I rarely, if ever, actually regret my decision. I saw a lot and learned and experienced a lot. There's also an independence in walking away from the security of the 9-5. By the way, Laos is very beautiful and extremely cheap. One thing you might think about is doing a TEFL course before you go. If you can teach English - and especially if you can do it well - you'll always find it easy to get a job in most of S America and Asia. Given that this recession/depression can be expected to last until 2013 it could be useful to have a skill that would enable you to stay away for a while.

Yes you would get by on that easily. Spent 4 months in SE Asia last yr and spent about €1000. .if you budget you;ll manage fine! Its dirt cheap there

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,665 ✭✭✭gary the great

On €5 a day you wouldnt be able to do anything fun...like where did you stay at night for a couple of euro? And then where did you eat?

Any partying or excursions would be way over budget...
