voip setup & skype

    Hi, been looking around here and thinking of changing bb provider, and while at it maybe also my telephone to a voip service, however I have a question regarding compatiability with skyp..

    If I go with a provider like blueface (which seems handiest as I call the uk as much as I call ireland) and get a 'LINKSYS VoIP PAP2T' adapter for my current land phone, will I be able to call skype as from what I gather skype is proprietry and blueface is sip (is this correct or am I way off with this..?)

    If this is possible, how do I dial the sip/skype contacts (Is it configurable on the linksys?? (Guess)) from the land phone,

    my reckoning is that I may also get a 3 payg mobile (with skype, which I gather is free to use over 3g) and then its free calls between my home and mobile (gfs mobile actually).

    Cheers,
    km

    also, my line was with eircom, and now with utv, is there anyway I can port this to blueface, or would it mean starting a contract with eircom?

    Hi KM,

    Just a week ago you would not have been way off with your analysis, but in that time period Skype have announced a SIP interface to their proprietary software. While initially geared towards business users it's too-early to tell what the impact will be from a consumer's perspective.

    So I would not make any expensive hardware purchases or long-term commitments right now until you are clear in your own mind as to what the lay of the land will be in say, twelve months time.

    What is clear is that there is a SIP/Skype convergence that for several years was a gray market with no official approval, but this is no longer the case and it has yet to play out.

    Regarding your landline, remember you rent the line, but the number is yours to keep, should you wish to keep it. So if you were to cancel your landline , you would send them a cancellation notice along with a porting form that Blueface provide you. You would not be obligated to Eircom/UTV or anyone else and you would not need to pay any further line rental to anyone. Blueface could surely provide you with better clarification than I.

    Think I will wait and see once I get the bb sorted, I read on the faq on bluface that they could only do eircom, but wasnt sure if that meant eircom as in 'traditional' land line (as opposed to ntl/upc/cable) or eircom themselves.. just threw it in at the end there, will drop them a line closer to the time;
    cheers

    just a question, if you dont pay line rental who do you turn to if you have a problem with the line? surely eircom maintain the line and if it goes down they wont be fixing something that they are not getting paid for?

    do you mean after switching with blueface? If so, then there is no line as its a voice over internet protocol setup (VOIP) and therefore it sends voice as data over an internet connection (which may well be another 'landline'..)

    If you mean with utv then eircom do maintain a line but depends on various factors, and I am not sure how it is with ireland (I am from scotland originally). if its simmilar then eircom will have a wholesale department that bills utv who then bill the consumer, unless there is local loop unbundling in forec (google llu);

    sorr if I have missed something, not too sure what you meant;

    what i mean is that if i switch to blueface do i still have to keep paying line rental to eircom as they provide the line and internet connection?

    eircom do the lines, so AFAIK to have the internet by fixed line you need to be paying eircom or some other provider for the lines,

    smart and magnet are the llu providers but i think you will need a wireless internet like clearwire for to not be paying line rental?

    what i am getting at is if you tell eircom you are leaving who looks after your line and who provides your net connection.......

    yep - I am currently looking at bb only with upc as I am in a cable area and they doo good, fast bb for reasonable price; cant really imaginge a situation where voip over a fixed line bb connection would work out much cheaper, unless maybe you wanted a cheap 'secon' line or a line in another country (like skype out line in uk or something)
