I downloaded it just after making a call on Fring! it looks good but I havent made a call on it yet. Its far prettier looking than Fring anyway!

    personally I quite dislike Fring.

    update on Skype app
if your phone has been jailbroken you need to update mobilesubstrate in Cydia. Then it will work properly!

Tried calling a Skype contact while out in the park and it told me my network (which is O2) doesn't support Skype calling.

So presumably it works on wifi but not on 3G or Edge. Disappointing.

I suppose I can sit out in the garden and use my wifi network, and use it in hotels and so on - but basically Truphone doesn't seem particularly threatened (Truphone lets you make cheap international calls). Pity you can't call Skype-to-Skype on 3G or Edge, though.

I quite like Fring actually, don't see what's wrong with it.

What baffles me is that 3 does have Skype on some of its phones - you can only use it to call Skype-to-Skype, but that's good enough.

I can't understand why O2 doesn't have the same facility.

I'm thinking seriously about moving to 3 when my contract is up, purely because of this.

The vanilla iPhone's API blocks VoIP when you're not on WiFi. I imagine this was put in place to satisfy the U.S. operators who didn't want people using their unlimited data packages to make purely VoIP calls.

You can get a hack on Cydia (afaik) which fools the API into thinking that you're on WiFi when making a VoIP call, regardless of what network you're on.

Lads hold out till June. I am running the 3.0 beta software on my iPhone and I've made a number of Skype calls this week over 3G-no wifi required. Quality was perfect. I've posted a screenshot over on the O2forums site under the iPhone skype thread.

Not so, Seamus - I have often used Truphone to call Japan from the park. Only problem is that it's annoyingly laggy.

pity is doesn't have the sms function as that is the only reason I use Skype

been using Skype on iPhone (1st gen, jailbroken, US phone) and it's been great

I have called international landlines and mobiles and it's worked really well. So much handier than having to sit at PC with a headset

I had been under the impressions that it would integrate with iPhone contacts list/address bok, but it doesn't - which is a pity. The Mac version of Skype does

I was never able to get acceptable call quality with Fring

Between this and Eirtext, who needs a sim card? :D

Anyone who want's to use their phone outside their house and free wifi connections. Until you're able to use over 3G it won't take off as fully as they hope.

Assuming that you're using Truphone anywhere, then it's not exactly VoIP - you ring a local number over GSM which then routes the call via VoIP. I can imagine that would be laggy alright. So it's technically a "free" call because your call to the local number is included in your bundle, but it's not true VoIP.
