    Howrya?
ok, i spotted some airsoft guns up in a local pet store the other day (random) and have been completely intruiged by the whole thing..
here was me thinking these things were illegal in this country. Happy days they're not.

SO, basically i'm looking at getting a fancy new airsoft gun. i'll be getting a brucie bonus soon enough and i generally don't like doing things by halves... so i want a top tier gun.

tbh, i'll probably mainly be using it for target practice - which i suppose is a bit of a waste, but most likely i'll be joining in some games. i used to practice targeting when i was younger at home in the countryside, so i reckon i'd fancy myself as a sniper.

i've read shedloads about how boring a sniper can be, but i know i'd enjoy it.

Having said that, i don't think i'd only want a sniper - i think i'd prefer a good AEG which could double as a sniper. is this realistic, or is it better to keep two?

i was looking at various models - i'm still pretty new so please tell me how much of a fool i am for picking these models

    http://www.eirsoft.ie/store/product_info.php?cPath=22_29&products_id=144or this one:
    <snip>(banned retailer)
i like the rail on this (and the look), can anyone comment on its use as an assault weapon and sniper? Are G&G any good? is the muzzle velocity good enough for a sniper? is the hop up good?

Is this overkill? <snip>(banned retailer) any opinions?

is this available in ireland? NICE:

i like the look of this! http://www.eirsoft.ie/store/product_info.php?cPath=38&products_id=256

also for snipers, are bolt action better than electric?

any other tips or "Avoids" would be greatly appreciated!

    cheers in advance

Ok, firstly welcome to the sport and the forum
    <snip>
G&G are a vey good brand, very reliable, great internals, fantastic attention to detail. The M16 R4 you linked there would make a great main. As far as it making a sniper? Well because we are limited to 1j muzzel velocity sniper rifles cannot shoot any further than AEGs. With upgrades a sniper can be made a bit more accurate but there is no significant advantages to using a sniper rifle over an AEG.

Some people decide to go for AEG sniper rifles for exactly that reason, an M14 for example can be selected between fully automatic and single fire, will have a similar range to a sniper rifle but can fill an assault role if needs be.

THe Dragunov you linked is one of the most anticipated airsoft guns to be released this year, I know a lot of people on this board will be considering selling their internal organs to get one. There's no such thing as overkill in airsoft.

THere are pictures of Tony and Richie from eirsoft playing with a DSR-1 over in germany recently. Whether this means they'll be getting them in though... Well you'd just have to ask 'em.

    cheers spetz.

i do like the m16 r4. there does seem to be a number of very similar rifles all around the same price - is there any real difference?

on a side note, i see certain retailers are band. i'm assuming this means it would be wise to avoid purchasing from them?

Now i'm getting real excited. are there any others you'd reccomend?

With armalites, there are loads of variations but as long as the manufacturer is the same, so should the internals.

Avoid them like the plague, especialy if your new to airsoft.

The M16 R4 you linked to is a brilliant gun, but isn't really a target gun, more of a CQB type. G&G are a brilliant brand so if you are willing to splash the cash, I would definitely buy one. I have a G&G M4 and it has never let me down. For target practice, if it's your first gun, I wouldn't get a sniper. I would get something like an M16 or M15 SPR or DMR. G&G make a lovely M14. There is a DBoys M16 SPR but this is not as high end as the G&G. Classic Army make an M15 SPR but recently people have had problems with CA internals. If you are really determined to go for a bolt action, the Tokyo Marui VSR G-Spec is supposed to be the best on the market. Another great option is the SL9. There is a Star/Ares SL9 and a CA SL9. This is a great option because it can take from 20 to 2500 round mags as it accepts all G36 mags. The Ares is supposed to be the best but I have heard the CA ones are decent too. You can also get an SL8 which is the same but with a G36K style scope rail instead. Wouldn't recommend this as the scope is pretty hard to see through where as with the SL9 you can get a 3-9x40 scope or something like it which will suit it better.

    Hope this helps!

In my opinion you can't go wrong with a good M14 + scope. I got AGM one(I think) from my brother as a birthday present but some of the internals have CYMA markings. I've only played a few full games but think that this is the business.

Out Of interest guys, assuming you have a good sniper rifle, properly calibrated , how far away from your target would you be able to hit something the size of say a can?

That depends on what sniper you have, how well zeroed your scope is and how well adjusted your hop is. But, if you have a steady hand and the VSR I mentioned earlier, I have heard people say they will hit one at about 75 feet. If you got a precision barrel and a really good hop like a Firefly, maybe even 100.

I can hit people at 100 feet no problem and I only have a Steyr SSG.

Oh and the expensive sniper isn't available in Ireland. A similar one is. VERY pricy though ( at least I think this is the one ).

Whoops! Still if I use heavier BB's I can hit a coke can at 90-100 feet.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 239 ✭✭pokermonkey

    I want that one.... NICE!!!
100 ft - not really that far is it? a bit dissappointing but hey, maybe with a bit of practice you can hit a person at 200ft?!
i live beside some woods in wicklow - perfect airsofting place! might practice with a couple of cans when i get one!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,800 ✭✭✭Tomtom364

airsoft in ireland dosnt really have a range of 200ft.
the devices arnt that powerful. for a reason.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,893 ✭✭✭Dread-Lock

Yeah I think I'm going to be practicing awhile to hit someone with my SSG at 200ft. As Tom said you won't get 200ft with a 1J gun.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 239 ✭✭pokermonkey

hmm, is it just me or does 100ft not soiund particularly far?
still - i suppose the point of a sniper is that it you're only meant to take one shot!
good stuff guys, thanks to you all! going window shopping this weekend - cant wait!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,893 ✭✭✭Dread-Lock

Well thats why we suggest people don't buy snipers. They have the same range as an AEG. So you don't really have that much of an advantage.

And I wouldn't say the point of being a sniper is that your meant to take one shot. The point of being a sniper is that you use stealth and you only need one shot.

I know you said you've read loads about being a sniper, but you might want to think about it again. As you don't seem to know about the major drawback of sniper rifles.

I would personally say go for a long range AEG like an M14 or the SL9 I linked to earlier. Or even a full length G36. I would consider the SL9 a great choice because if you like sniping, you can use the 20 round mags that come with it and if you decide you don't, you can buy 470 round mags and use it in an assault role. If you buy a bolt action and you don't like sniping, you're stuck with a useless gun.

    Cheers mini,
I think i'm now most likley to get either the M14 scout, SL9, G36, or M15 with rail. i was looking at a CA 8-2 and a Well AWM APS 2, but from what you said i might stick with a combi.
Not sure if i'll get out to any of the shops tomorrow, but will try to get out to MIA on Sunday (i think its the only one in dublin open on sunday)
Thanks - i'll let you know how i get on, N

They are a banned retailer. Mentioning them is against boards.ie rules.

ah, i won't in future then - sorry.
so - sneaked out earlier - and got a CA 8.
nice. shoots a treat, but need to calibrate it a little. (shooting a little left of centre at the moment)
i'll let you know how i get on when i use it a little more!

Right, since getting my CA8-2 yesterday - i've destroyed numerous apples/oranges from 100 ft; Can now hit a 50c coin from around 80ft (within around 3 goes); I'm slowly correcting the sight on my scope (havin trouble moving it down even further).
I've out-grown my garden and am heading up to my house in wicklow for a little space. Will be checking out the range.
Fantastic "little" gun. As its the only one i've fired, i cant really compare it to anything, but in any case, i'm a happy customer.
the shop i got the gun in was low on BB's so i went elsewhere late yesterday and got a 480 clip (big big difference from the 15 clips) and a bag of .25 bbs which also made a big difference.
Thanks to everyone who helped. hopefully we'll be shooting eachother soon enough! :)
