    Excellent news! :D
That will be the positive deciding factor for anyone contemplating going to salthill for the ocean race, so anyone still undecided.... it'll definetely be worth going in for now! :)

They just had to find an excuse to visit Salthill this year! They must be missing the craic since the airshow faded away. Any good news yet Steyr? Will we ever hear the thunder in the skies again over Galway bay? Will the GAAW ever have anything to do again. They're awful quiet lately, poor guys. Obama has taken the wind out of their sails.

They're also in Portrush Co Antrim on 5th and 6th September along with the Eurofighter.

Does anyone know what airport they will be using for the event? I saw a programme about the Red Arrows the other night. It was at an airshow in the UK, after they flew back to the airport after their display, they came back in to meet the crowd in a bus. Any chance they could do this at Salthill?

They done that one year at Salthill when they came back in a bus and meet the crowd. They always use Shannon Airport when they display at Salthill.

Actually the Air Corps CASA picked them up at Shannon and flew them into Galway airport. I know because I happened to be there seeing a friend off. They were going to the annual fund raising bash that evening.

I doubt if they'll be doing that this time unless they go to their other display at La Ferte Alais in France first.

What frequency if any do the Red Arrows use during their displays?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 668 ✭✭✭ch252

They're on the Salthill frequency, 121.750, for the airshows anyway, i can't see why it wouldn't be the same for this. They couldn't be on the tower frequency like.

I think he means the frequency, if any, that they use as an intercom. For example when the leader calls to 'break'. I remember last time it was broadcast on speakers along the prom, real exciting stuff. I doubt they use the 121.75 frequency for that, i don't know how they do it.

Its 243 something IIRC, ill dig the last one I heard them on in Salthill later. They actually have several that they can use.

Yes if anyone would have the frequency between the Reds leader and the rest of the display pilots or if Steyr could tell us if a PA system will be set up on the day for would be great

That was just putting the scanner to the mike for everybody to hear. Yes there will be a PA Syatem.

Steyr what is the craic with this. Any fast jets to be announced?

Red Arrows alone make this worth going to. Saw them at Farnborough last year on saturday, they did their whole show and it was brilliant.

I recently found a site belonging to an ex-RAF and Red Arrows pilot. I've read loads of his stories on his site www.tonycunnane.co.uk I'm sure some of you will find his aviation and military experiences as interesting as I did!

Are the Red Arrows in Galway on Saturday 30th or Sunday 31st? The Volvo Race planner states Sunday but various websites are saying Saturday

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 796 ✭✭✭Johnnio13

    Red Arrows are Saturday morning.
I hear the anit-crowd will be releasing 99 red balloons from the Spanish Arch due to the imperial war machine that will be flying over Salthill.

They'd take the good out of anything.
Was watching the Red Arrow training on Nat Geo. Unbelievable stuff.
    Can't wait!!
Between that and the Salthill fives, it should be a good weekend.

    http://www.independent.ie/national-news/protesters-target-red-arrows-festival-flight-1750621.html

I see the anti brigade are at it again.. from the indo today

Anti-war protesters are threatening to rain on Galway's parade during the Volvo Ocean Race stopover.

The Galway Alliance Against War is seeking to gather support for a protest, not against the ocean-going yachts, but against an invitation to the crack air acrobatics team, the Red Arrows.

The much sought after RAF squad have been invited to Galway to perform during Saturday's in-port racing of the seven competing boats on Galway Bay.

The spectacular fliers -- no strangers to Galway, having participated at the Salthill Air Show on a number of occasions -- are a massive draw and have performed more than 4,000 exhibitions in 53 countries.

They were primarily responsible for drawing crowds of up to 90,000 to the annual Salthill Air Show and the organisers of the Galway stopover are expecting similar crowds in the city on Saturday.

But according to the Galway Alliance Against War (GAAW), their participation "will pollute the sky over Galway Bay" with their so-called "war machines".

The GAAW is organising a counter event on Saturday at the Spanish Arch, close to the headquarters of the Volvo Ocean Race stopover headquarters at Galway Harbour.

The alliance plans to release 99 red balloons to highlight its opposition to the Red Arrows flying over Galway Bay.

Now the Galway Hooker Association has rowed in behind the protest.

In a statement, the association said: "There is no connection between a sailing festival and the Red Arrows, and such a display of war machines should not be a part of a festival of sailing."

Meanwhile, the party continued in Galway yesterday with organisers Let's Do It Galway celebrating an attendance of more than 50,000 for the arrival of the boats and the events leading up to Sunday night's spectacular opening ceremony.

While the crews of the seven competing boats availed of some well-deserved rest and relaxation with their families, the entertainment went on non-stop at the race village and throughout Galway city.

Why are those idiots given so much publicity? Their last balloon stunt was punctured by the Garda and in any case someone who was there counted them. There were a maximum of fifty protestors compared to 90,000 at the airshow. That was two balloons each. Also the whole 99 red balloons thing is pretty obscure to most people based as it is on the old song from the seventies. They actually parody themselves with their antics. Their posters around Galway, well the five or six I saw have 'Red Arrows killers' on them. Which is beyond funny. :D

Ignore them, most people in Galway do anyway.

So the Red Arrows have nothing to do with Sailing:confused: Pray tell me, What has music got to do with sailing? What has dancing got to do with sailing? What has a puppet theatre got to do with sailing? what has circus got to do with sailing? etc.etc. Absolutely nothing!!!!!! The point is that they are all part of the overall festival being staged around the Volvo Ocean Race's stop over in Galway.

didn't they try the balloon thing a few years ago and the gardaí came along and popped all of them?

By far the best location is on the prom itself in salthill. It is worth the extra effort of parking the car someplace and walking to the prom. Traffic will be a nightmare i'm sure.
I can't wait for it its gonna be great, just hope the weather holds up!
I am afraid though that if some 'minority group with no real cause' do a stunt i may get emotionally, verbally and physically involved! :O hold me back someone!!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 668 ✭✭✭ch252

    hold me back someone!!

We'll be jumping in with you!:P

Wish it was over the docks, I have a gem of a lookout spot that very few people know of!

    Me too!

I heard somewhere that the red arrows were the only display team ever with permission to perform stunts directly over the crowds and fly towards the crowd. Are they still allowed do this or has it since been changed?

I know that they still enter the display from behind the crowd so they definitely fly over the crowd at some stage!

They're just p'ssed off in case no-one takes any notice of their floating pallets when all the other boats are there

I've only seen them once, and that was on Jersey for the liberation of the Channel Islands celebrations (happened a good while after the rest of Europe). They have a huge bay there between St Helier and St Aubin with high ground at either end and they did that manoeuvre where the two planes suddenly appear over the headlands and just head straight for each other at high speed and then spiral up together at the last minute straight in front of your eyes over the sea. Absolutely breathtaking!
