    Hi all,
I've been trying to sort this problem out for weeks now but still no success!
its hard to describe...When i record using my mic the playback is horribly crackly and out of sync.Im pretty positive that it raises the tone of my guitar and voice up 2 tones!
I havent a clue whats causing it,please any help would be really appreciated!
I've only recently bought this laptop and recording was fine on it at first!
Im using Ableton live 7 software and an external mic. I also get the same effect when i record on audacity or windows sound recorder with the built in mic! something i did must have brought it on!

attached a file, guitar playing in standard tuning. (chords Am-C-E-G)...you can clearly hear how the tone is raised!

    specs:
Vista, 2Ghz, 4GB RAM, Over 25GB HD Space left

    Strange one ok ....

One would think the only way a pitch can change is when the playback frequency is higher than the record frequency.

What's stranger is it seems like a exact tone up.

The crackles may well be related to that problem or could be buffer size related i.e. set too low.

However as it's a PC it could be anything .....

2 tones is 16.66666%. Very strange.
That would be the same as recording at 44K and playing back at 51K which is close enough to 48K that this may be it. Is it playing back EXACTLY 2 tones higher or slightly above 2 tones higher?. If it is slightly above this is probably the problem. Your sound card is probably set to 44.1K and your software to 48K.
Here is a really funny clip of Van Halen where the backing track for Jump is played at the wrong sample rate. I'd say the person responsible got kicked in the nads then sacked for this one.

That is the funniest thing I've ever seen, ho ho ho.
Sounds like a sample rate issue alright. Recorded at one and played back at another...

yes it is exactly 2 tones higher. hmm it is a weird one huh!
well i set the sample rate on my software(using audacity for now) to 44100Hz so i take it thats the recorded sample rate right!?
so how do i check the sample rate on my sound card?because when i playback on audacity it sounds off!
thanks for the help guys i hope it is something simple like this!otherwise im gonna have to buy a new soundcard!

That happened to me in the states .There was a dj on b4 our set and he was using serato scratch .When we came on and put the backing track on the laptop ,the guitar was out of tune with the track. Couldn't figure out what the hell was going on .scratching my head , and trying to tune the guitar up and down .I figured it out later on the b _____had the pitch on the serato controller up a half semitone . I was luckier than eddie though I played the rest of songs up a semitone.
Unfortunately there is a you tube video of that event .

Eddie is notorious for being out of time ,check out studio version unchained he comes in an eighth note early.

ok so how do i change the sample rate of my soundcard? i have audacity as 44.1k so its recording in as that. it must be when this is played back with the soundcard(which is probably at 48k?) where it sounds higher!

Did you mention the make of soundcard?

There's usually a control panel specifically for the card.

Boys The track was fine.... Eddie had one of the drop tuned guitars instead of the one he should of had.... think its a Guitar tech fault ! :D

    Are you sure?
I would think Eddie is a good enough player to be able to transpose his playing if the guitar was tuned down by a regular interval. It sounds to me like he is having to bend notes to try and get in tune.

+ 1 on sample rate issue. I'd have a look at your hard drive space while you're at it though. On a machine of that spec I can imagine only 25GB of space being less than 10% of total space which is very much less than ideal.
