Dummy exhausts??

I'm driving a new Subaru Legacy diesel estate for today & tomorrow. It has two chrome exhaust 'outlets', one on each side - both of which are dummies. The actual exhaust outlets are on the bottom of the pipes, facing downwards, a couple of inches before the chrome ends. Is it just me, or is this a bit ridiculous?

I saw a bmw with a twin exhaust, when I got closer one of the pipes was just welded on. Thought it was quiet stupid especially on what looked like a expensive car tbh.

The funniest I saw tho was a crappy modified car which had what looked like a duel exhust far away, when I came close he just had a 4" pipe cut and threw in on. No weld or anything, you coul even see straight thru it to the ground hahah.

My boss at work bought a 05 BMW bike last week, exhausts both sides, one dirty, one clean as a whistle, he wasn't to pleased when I pointed out his "twin canned sports bike" had a dummy exhaust!

Stupid. Is this an aftermarket mod or does it come like that on the car as standard?

Bet they make the car look the business , I would have no problem with it as long as the car does actually have a twin pipe anyways

No, this is how it left the factory. I'll take a couple of pics tomorrow.

Funniest thing I saw was this fool revving his freezing cold Civic. As he tore off, yup, white smoke out one of the two exhausts... Idiot lol

imo, if something serves no practical purpose it shouldn't be on the car.

I had no idea car makers were at this, shameful stuff, the engineers must cringe at what the stylist are doing.

Hang on, is someone trying to say that a purely cosmetic piece of kit was put on a car? Never thought I'd see the day.

I could comment on that, but the words don't seem to come out of my head the way I want them too...

The Ferrari California has fake pipes too, similar to the lexus ones. Whats the world coming to when a FERRARI has fake pipes? WHY? Is anyone really going to think your a pussy cos you have a Ferrari with only 2 pipes?!

The current-model Civic 1.8 petrols have those two fancy triangular exhausts. The diesel ones have them too, but they're fake on those - the diesel exhaust, similar to the Subaru one in the OP points down towards the road a few inches behind the fake triangle exhaust.

And the ones that dont use the triangle exhausts, have blanking plates put in instead - like what they'd put in for the button if you dont have aircon on the dashboard

    looks horrid :o

On no...I always thought they were far to tight to the plastic surround (dirt and heat) but thought it was just good Honda engineering! I'm crushed.

They're the 1.4 petrols. They offer fake triangle exhausts as a dealer fit extra for those :pac:

To be honest, I'd rather have fake ones like the ones on this thread than the ones that are actually connected to this car! :pac:

I thought Ford's recent attack of fake vents was pretty stupid, but great big fake exhausts?

    Crazy stuff.

    Corolla Compressor, also guilty
    corollacompressor_2.jpg

only one of the tailpipes is connected

The IsF and Ferrari have fake pipes to reduce lifting at high speed.....apparently.

I read it was because of their in bumper design, they would get too hot and melt the surrounding trim if they were connected. I don't have any issue with the ones like on the IS-F of California as at least the exhasut gases are still directed out of the fancy openings.

It boils down to they simply don't need them but they look the piece... Same can be said for car modifiers, most cars dont need spoilers, turbo vents etc its all about looks !!!!

the point is that if they are going to the bother of putting them on, why not just make the real exhaust like that?

On the Subaru they are both functioning tailpipes. They exit pointing to the ground as many diesels do so that the soot that the engine produces is kept away from the back of the car. Visually, they appear to exit rearwards but its just a styling feature.
