External Harddrive - How to save?

Ok I dropped a LaCie external harddrive from my desk. It wasnt powered on at the time but even though I can switch it on its making clicking noises and I cant see it (please excuse the fact I am a Mac Monkey). I removed the casing to see if anything obvious was wrong and now I am getting a beeping noise. Sorry for the lack of technical info but does anyone know what I can do to check it. Worse case senario is that all the files are gone as this is my backup and it looks like someone deleted some folder recently.

Btw, I am paranoid right now.

    It is probably a goner.

You could remove the drive itself from the enclosure and put it in another one (~€20) and see if you can read it. This is really just on the off-chance that the enclosure hardware itself is damaged, and not the hard-drive. Which is pretty slim, but you may chance it if you want.

More than likely though the drive itself is damaged, and the only way you could retrieve info from it is with a very expensive recovery service.

Freezer trick! If the above does not work then throw it in the freezer for about 3 hours then try power it on. If it works you'll have a short period of time to get as many important files off the drive as possible.

PUT IN SEALED PLAsTIC WATERPROOF BAG, in the freezer as above.

I doubt the freeze trick will work, it stems from an issue with some old hard disks where the control circuit would fail due to heat build up when powered on. The issue you are seeing is most likely the heads have been moved and are not reading the platters correctly. Your options are to raw read the disk and try and rebuild the MFT and if that does not work it will have to be sent to a lab to have the platters removed and read on specialist equipment.
