Loss of Power in BMW 320d

    Hi,

    I have a 03 BMW 320d that hestitates at 1900rpm to 2500rpm in 3rd but mainly in 4th and 5th.

This hestitation is intermittent and hence unpredictable.

I disconnected the MAF thinking that this was the source but the hestitation is still there.

It sits at 2000rpm and creeps up to 2500rpm.

When it hits 2500rpm there is a sudden surge of power and a suitably impressive cloud of smoke.

On occassion it will not move past 2000rpm, this is when it has load say going up hill.

The car has 58k on it and the 5 speed variant.

Can anyone shed any light on this?

    Thanks in advance

I know a lot of the 2L D's of that generation were prone to turbo failures, from those symptoms that would be my guess.

is the 5 speed version not the 136bhp model which didnt surrfer from turbo failure?
i thought it was only the early versions of the 6 speed 150bhp model that suffered?

i may be wrong, and would recommend getting it over to AC Cars to have it checked over.

No, it is a 150bhp. Some of the earlier ones were 5 speed.

Hope it is not the turbo!!

    Thanks

Sounds like the sterotypical EGR control fault. it will need to be diagnosed to confirm of course.

Could be a coil pack also.

But we're all just amchair mechanics!

I was looking at some 320's in some of the garages in the North (01-04 models). There seems to be quite good value up there but was just wondering what to look out for regarding this model with over 100,000 miles? Has anyone any experience buying from any garages in the north? Sorry to hijack the thread!

Early 320d's suffered from turbo failure so more than likely the problem but as stated best to get diagnostic machine to work it out, he's the one with all the answers lol

    is the turbo used VNT?

If i knew what VNT I would answer!!!

Anyone know any good diagnostic people who work on BMW`s other than stealers?

    Thanks

    Well got it sorted.

Turns out to have been a pressure convertor on the Turbo that was faulty.

    Thanks to those that responded.
