I have an early 08 iMac, the alumunium 20" 2Ghz yoke. I was considering upgrading the RAM as I have start to use more apps and its starting to slow slightly. (Although its not Windows slow! :D)

I did a bit of a google search but I couldnt find anything with decent advice. So im wondering if its really necessary or what you folks think?

I use my mac for recreational use so mainly music, photos (and im starting to edit photos a bit more hence the increased demand on the machine) etc.

I cant remember what the RAM is at the mo, (duh i know!) but what would you recommend? Do i need to buy the RAM direct from Apple or is there another reliable site I can use?

    Any advice greatly appreciated! :)

I upgraded my imac from 1 -> 4gb. Its very handy to do.

You can buy the ram here...http://www.crucial.com/mac/index.aspx
the website has a scanner to tell you which ram type you need.
    I paid something like €60 for 4gb

To check how much RAM you currently have, go to:

Apple menu > About the Mac.

I'm guessing you have the first rev Al iMac which came with 1GB (2 X 512MB chips - check System Profiler to confirm this). You only have two slots and to upgrade to the full 4GB you will have to replace both chips. So you'd be looking for 2 x 2GB chips.

Never buy RAM from Apple. As said above, buy from Crucial. I've had very good experiences with them.

Generally I would recommend maxing out the RAM if you can.

This is good advice even when buying a new computer, because you can save hundreds and get the same if not better Ram from Crucial.

I picked up 4GB of RAM (2x 2gb) for €50 from Crucial which was fantastic!

If anyone wants my old 1GB card let me know.
