No Car Tax since 2007

    Hi
Just looking for a bit of advice. My Brother decided to inform us that he is above the law:rolleyes:
He has decided that paying Road Tax is not for him and thus has not done so fro 2 years. Infact since he bought the car he currently drives.

Last time he got caught he has a "Friend" in the Gardai that they saved his bacon but this can not happen each and every time he gets caught. He just gets it signed of as not used and end of issue.

I think he is stupid as this can not work every time.

What trouble could he be in if caught and prosecuted?
Also if he was unlucky enough to be involved in a crash is he insured?

I dunno about insurance (in UK you are not insured if you are not taxed I think)

The cops certainly can take the car and crunch it though, two months grace to avoid that scenario - not two years!

The Gardai can take his car off him and to get his car back he will have to pay the towing costs the storage costs and will have to back tax the car.

    Thanks
If the same Garda was saving his ass with a no usage sign off after repeated stops could they also get into trouble?

Not really it would all be on your brothers head as he has made a false declaration on that form which is also an offence.

If caught (I hope he is btw) how far back would he have to tax the car?

TBH i hope he is caught, states that he should not have to pay car tax etc... and is above the law. load of crap TBH.

He would have to back date the tax from the last time it was taxed and then pay for his current for 2009 and the tow fee €125 (approx) storage fee €25 a day (approx)

OP, my thoughts would be that you should either report him anonymously, or find something else to worry about.

Exactly, leave him to it, there is always someone somewhere breaking the rules. This is petty stuff compared to what some of the pillars of our society have been gettin away with recently. Your brother will get caught eventually and pay the price.

Suppose he gets away with it until maybe 1st April.

What's to stop him saying he didn't drive the car until that day and try and duck out of his back debt?

I know a guy (civil servant cute hoor) who would drive his Bora for 3 or 4 months every year without tax and go into the Garda station each time with a big pious face claiming the car had been off the road:rolleyes:.

He would boast about the money he was saving in the pub but everyone just scoffed at him for being a tight git.

I wouldn't say that there is a fairly high chance of being caught, its for this reason i'll always check the car before signing these forms.
