Being a total newbie I think the first question is what kind of daylight hours one shoots rabbits at? This would define the aperture. The other question is magnification. What do people use on the small critters?

Dusk and Dawn, but the little fellas can be out anytime. I have a Hawke Endurance 30 IR 3-12x50 on my 17 hmr. It is great in low light. I have watched a fox from 200 yards away at 2300 hrs or so during the summer months. Very clear crisp glass, its a little on the heavy side. The Ir works well to. Have taken many rabbit past the 150 yard mark with it. Wish it was this price when i got mine think they were 400 euro a year and half ago.

Get something with a mildot reticle if you can. Any of the Bushnell scopes are good value for money. Mag and zoom range from 4-12/6-18 x 40/50 will do nicely for that rifle.

    And what RifleHunter said above.
