Advice for purchasing new clubs for high handicapper

Now want to replace my father's old clubs.

with so many different clubs out there that are forgiving/game improvement technologies, I'm having difficulty separating the BS from the facts.

Anyone any advice on what are good quality clubs that I should consider?

Am I better off getting new rather than 2nd hand, as it seems many of the newer clubs have exotic metals (e.g. Titanium etc), so may be more probe to damage, as softer metals?

Some of the brands I was looking at include

    TaylorMade R7 CGB
    Cobra UFi
    TaylowMAde Burner

    Any help appreciated.

Emmm, you can remove that thought from your head anyway. The example you give, Titanium, is as strong as steel but at a much lower weight, however it is much more expensive. So you will now see almost all Drivers are Titanium since it is much lighter than steel for the same strength.

In terms of whether to go 2nd hand or not, thats kinda up to you. It all depends on your budget. But the advise that is given all the time here is try to go to a shop where you can try all the clubs out, and preferably see the ball travel, i.e. at a driving range, not in a simulator. The see which one feels nicest to you.

One thing to have a look at (depending on your location of course) is that foregolf in Kildare are having a sale shortly, they are custom fit specialists so may be the place to go!

hi , I'd recommend callaway big bertha's designed for easy launch with a wide sole for anti dig. They could be picked up second hand but are not terribly expensive new around 450 -500 maybe even cheaper

fitting - can that be done in a shop (e.g. McGuirks) or only by PGA pro's at golf courses?

Best place for fitting is Fore Golf in Kildare, I've not been myself yet but I definitely will be going this year. Licksy went there so maybe he can give a better comment on them!

I have been to Fore golf and it is a good spot.

    They know Licksy from Kilkenny.

Not saying that this is true of the OP, but in general, unless they are very tall or short, how much benefit is custom fitting going to be to a high handicapper with an inconsistent swing?

If it was me I would be looking for a good quality 2nd hand game improvement set that I can sell on for a small loss in a couple of years time. Ping G2 or G5, Callaway Big Bertha, Mizuno Mx17 or Mx19, various Taylor Made and Cobra models all hold their value fairly well. If you get a set from a year or two back, you are losing out on virtually nothing technology wise.

Then, when you have improved and have a consistent repeatable swing, get fit for your next set.

Yes that's good advice. You'll get a very good 2nd hand set that will be much better value for money. Just avoid the blades/muscle-backs and go for an iron with a good cavity (eg Ping G5).

    thanks for the advice guys.

where is a safe place to get 2nd hand clubs.

EBay has its dangers, even though there are some sellars with 10,000+ golf sales, I still feel unsure when buying stuff like this on internet only.

Are golf course pro's a good place - i.e. for good value, as I know they will provide a genuine set, but is there other places that can provide better value for money?

    Ebay is probably the cheapest.
For 2nd hand clubs this place is also excellent - http://www.golfbidder.co.uk/
Keep an eye on the For Sale Thread stickied at the top of this forum too.

don't buy new. You can get great clubs for no money at all, second hand.

Out the other day at Malahide. They had a set of titleist forged 660 for €250, cost €900 last year. I might even pick them up myself.

You could get a fine set for €500, driver, irons, putter. The lot.
