Hey, just wondering would anyone else be put off applying to their course if they found out loads of people in their year were applying for it?

Its really annoying, I mean, sure everyone has a right to apply for their own course but I was banking on making a fresh start next year, only to find out that about 10 other people in my year are applying for the course too!

Is anyone else like this or could someone offer advice on telling me to cop on or what? The course is UCD Science so a lotta people in it, I know!

If it's a massive course there's a good chance you won't see them too often, unless they decide to be clingy and want to hang out with you instead of meeting new people... In which case you just meet new people and bring them with you. :p

(That said, I was severely put off doing a particular course when I discovered a guy who irritates the hell out of me had it down on his CAO...)

Also, if UCD Science is like TCD Science, there are different modules within it so you may not even share any classes with them, depending on what they pick.

Hahaha, really would not be like this!
Hmm yeah. Tis a big course like. Anyone here doing the course? How big is it, I mean do you know a lot of people through the course!

Absolutely massive, plus the fact that you'll be doing electives means that you might only see them the odd time in the corridors.

Of course this is a double edged sword in that you might find it hard to meet new people, but coupled with the enormous drop out rate in 1st year (40%+) and the different specialisations you'll be branching off into in 2nd year you mightn't even see them for 3/4 of your degree.

I think It would be nice to see some old faces aswell as new ones, but I totally see your point. I would be a bit annoyed if everyone I knew was on my course :p

I'd prefer to be in a completely different course than most of my friends, I fully intend on keeping contact with most of the people I hang around with, but I wouldnt really like to be in the same course as them tbh.

Like someone who'd be a pretty good friend of mine voiced interest in a course that I liked the idea of at the time, completely put me off.

Luckily the course I'm going for have a science prerequisite which is some what an asshat filter when it comes to my year :D

Theres about 5 people in my year goimng for trinity engineering, including one of my best friends. About another 5 have ucd engineering down first which i have second.

Doesnt bother me at all, kinda like the idea tbh, its too be expected from our school, highest level of sending people on to engineering in the country aparently!

I live right down the road from DCU but opted to go to Trinity for the very reason you're worried about, but if Science in UCD is in any way similar to that in TCD then you'll have no problem making new friends and mixing.

If it turns out that you don't like some of the people on your course at least you'll have those people that you already know there.

There is a good few pple in my year applying for my course that I want. I think its great that they are as all of them are my friends. I dont really want to start college knowing nobody if ya know what I mean.

Most of my year are going to IT Tallaght.
Kinda puts me off my fallback course there..

3 people in my class have put down the same course as me, one as his first choice and the other two with it further down there list. Aw well, just live with it I say.

There's one guy in my year with the same courses as me down. It doesn't really bother me tbh.

I guess if I really didn't like him, it'd be a pain, but chances are it'd be clear now I didn't like him and so there would be no reason for us to suddenly be best friends in college.

I can understand the fresh start thing, but I don't really get why you wouldn't want your friends to do the same course as you

My friend is in second year science in UCD. About 40 people from my year are in it and she doesn't hang out with any of them. The course is so huge that she doesn't see most of them at all except meeting them in the corridor.

I wouldn't worry too much about it. Science is a very popular course with so many people you probably won't even be able to find the people from your school.

Half my year last year went to UCC, completely put me off going anywhere near Cork.
(Well, it was one of many motivating factors tbh)
Some of them I'm actually friends with (2 in particular)- still though. No to Cork.

There's only one other person going for DCU in my year and it's one of my best friends so I don't mind :D

We're doing completely different courses though, so it'll be a fresh start for me!

I understand as well, it's not that I hate them or anything, but a couple of people in my year are aiming for DCU (none doing either of the courses I put down, thankfully) and it did put me off for a while. But who cares? There's something like 8, 000 people there AND the city of Dublin. And I'm good friends with one of them anyway :P

But I get where you're coming from. One of my friends is putting Galway down simply because she wants to get away from this area. It almost made me think of doing the Arts in UCC for a while...

There's a few going to the college (DCU :D) I want to go to but different courses, it's grand though they're good friends of mine.

Tbh, I can see this being annoying if there was some knob you didn't like going for the same course.

Im from Cork. Cork is a big enough place. So is UCC.

If it's a course you really wanna do I wouldn't let the fact that others from your class might be going there aswell to put you off it.

Yeah, I know that, but I'd still rather not go there.
There are other factors, I wasn't just put off it because of that- meh.

I do have UCC 5th on my CAO, but chances are if I don't get medicine anywhere else, I won't get it there. It's more of a "just in case" kind of a thing.

This is the same for me. About 2/3 of my school last year went to UCC. This year, it's going to be the same. It's motivation to work and get my place in TCD/UCD! :pac: So, I have UCC on my list CAO... just down the list a bit

OP if that is the course you really want dont let the fact that some people you know have it down as well put you off.

As a lot of people here have said that its a large course so you might not even see them:)
They could easily change their minds about doing that course or not get the points/entry requirements....
if its what you really want go for it!
    Good luck in the LC:D
