Writing an IOU...

I've searched and can't find anything relevant so excuse me if I have missed something.

Basically my better half is going to give a friend of hers a loan (approximately 5grand). Is it possible for her to type out a legally binding document herself and if so what needs to be on it? All this document needs to clarify is that a loan has been given, no timescale on repayments etc etc etc... Basically just to prevent any future issues arising (such as 'I don't know what you're talking about' etc etc etc). Very little chance of this actually happening but I suppose you never really know. Any advice much appreciated, thanks again.

Why not use a standard loan agreement form like one from a credit union as a template?

Thanks for the quick response! Sorry, I should have said I am completely hopeless with regards these matters but this should do it.

Google for "promissory note" - not quite an IOU but it is probably what you are looking for.
