Are there private athletics coaches who train teens in athletics in the Dublin area who would coach a teen in either Ringsend or Santry? I feel the child is not getting enough specific training within the club and switching club is not an option. She spens most nights doing sprints and long runs but noo emphassis is placed on field events.

    Any ideas?

The answer is probably no. There aren't private athletic coaches and anyone who pretends to be one is a chancer so don't waste your money.

Changing clubs may be the best option although you seem to rule that out. There are clubs who will give a good spread of coaching.

Is it that she doesn't get field event coaching or not good enough coaching at her events?

Its a difficult one David - many clubs really struggle with trying to give young athletes exposure to the different disciplines. It can be, more often than not, a manpower issue rather than an interest or ability to train issue.

My suggestion is that you or your daughter let one of the coaches know of an interest in some of the field events and ask for some coaching. While there may not be a coach available all the time, there may be an older athlete who can begin coaching come of the basics. If you dont ask.....

David, you're the Dad of the young high-jumper? It's a big problem for any club providing HJ coaching with that event being so weather-dependant. If it's not reasonably calm and dry on club night then it's virtually impossible. That's probably been the case at your daughter's club.

I agree with Mr Tingle - any decent athletics coach would find it distasteful to take money off a young athlete. And as lecheile says, ask the question at your present club. Ask what the coaches there suggest. If you don't get a proper answer then it's time to look at a club that has some pedigree in field event coaching, with indoor jumping facilities an advantage. Which narrows the options.

I see where you are coming from and have experienced similar myself when i was younger i had a was unable to get coaching in steeplechase within my club for many different reasons.
All i can say is some coaches from other clubs who have experience in field events are more often than not more than welcoming for people from other clubs training with them if you try approach some of these i sure they will have no problem. This is what happened with me and i was able to develop enough knowledge from them to go and and develop my technique.
Hope this helps as it is a shame to see talent not achieving their potential as a result of insufficient infrastructure
