    Hi

I'm reading a lot of conflicting stories about what I can and can't eat/drink and to be honest I'm completely baffled. I'm 5 weeks gone and a complete novice.

Can anyone tell me what I should be avoiding ie mayonaise, coffee? I also heard sliced ham is a no no and I love ham and cheese sandwichs for lunch! Also heard I can't eat sausages?

    Please help...

ask ur doc they should tell you everything and give you a booklet as well. I think only 1/2 cups of Tea/coffee is recommended but best to stay off it all together if you can. Caffine can make it harder to ingest iron also.
Mayo is not recommended if its home made- ie made with raw eggs as with some cheesecakes mousse ect. And on the sliced ham I think it applies to delis where the meat/mayo has been sitting out for a good few hours. They recommened preg women to stay away from deli counters for this reason but if you know your local deli and that their standards are good then have no worries. I've eaten from local deli and am fine. its up to urself I guess. As for sausages never heard of that.
Make sure ur taking ur folic acid and plenty of fresh fruit and veg, fibre and plenty of water.
Have a look at eumom.com and they have a nutrition section and you should get answers there. Its a great site too for any questions on the pregnancy. They have a birth club for the month ur due which you can join. Eumom would have a little more traffic on it that this site so u might get answers faster when u need to

    Hi,

The main things to avoid are shellfish ie prawns, mussells etc, unpasturised cheese such as brie etc and cured meats such as parma ham. Raw egg should be avoided too, so home made mayo is a no, no.
As far as sliced ham goes, only get it if you trust the deli as has been said. I think that one has more to do with food hygeine.
eumom.com or babycentre.co.uk are great sites with good resources for this kind of information, plus if you register you get weekly emails with updates on your stage of pregnancy which is nice.

i was just thinking about the sausages point. This could have been in reference to chrizio sausage. Pregnant woman are recommened to stay away from all un cooked meats. Having said that if you have always eaten the likes of chrizio or parma ham it I think it should be ok to eat as ur immune system is up to fighting off the listeria or whatever it is thats in those uncooked/cured meats (someone correct me if I'm wrong). Spanish docs do not recommend spanish woman to go off chrizio when pregnant as they most likely have been eating it all their lives.
