How do you explain being on boards?

I wonder if this is just me, but i find it hard to explain to my friend's my love for boards.ie
They think i am some physco for posting on an Internet forum and because i have boardsie friends that i hang out with all the time.
For instance, i was telling a friends about TLL night on Friday and this is what he said "I dunno htf you manage to hang out with Internet weirdos. Do you not have anything else to do" I was raging mad to say the least... But seriously are we weirdo's? Most people on boards are normal, some geeks.... Are we not?
Anyone have any similar experience? How do you explain boards to freinds and family?

Posting on boards doesn't make you a weirdo! I resent the implication.

Anyway most of my friends / family either post on boards or are aware of it.

They dont understand the lulz...They taught i was a bit weird because of another site im on ( a less vile version of 4chan) but once i showed them the funny pics and threads they were cool with it.

Ah, best part of my friends are all on boards really!
only 1 or 2 are active though.

dunno if we'd be considered weirdos..probably.
    ah well!

That just shows you their close-mindedness.
I don't explain it, a couple of my friends are on here. And everyone else doesn't ask, or assumes I just spend it watching porn

I don't really explain it, people ask what I'm doing and I just say I'm "looking at stuff"

Im just socially inept and create a defense system where I lord it over people online where my insecurities do not come into play and I can create a personality to make myself feel like I belong.Because after all, people who converse in RL are the common illiterate tracksuit wearing proletariat.

I generally don't even mention it. Because, in all honesty, I also have a real, proper life.

I guess it's my dark little secret.

But I have a friend who is e-stalking me and reading all my posts. So I have to be careful what I say! Little nosey gossipers them wimin.

Most of my friends are either on boards, are lurkers (hi Lee! :p) or just don't know about it so I don't have to explain my like of it

Never met anyone off boards.ie, but have met a few off munsterfans and a rovers messageboard before, perfectly normal.

Some people find it very weird meeting people off the internet, the same people who think that its not ok to do online dating and that think its weird to say mom instead of mammy or mam

Myself and my ex were on boards alot when we were together. I spend more time on it now that we're not together anymore.... I don't have to share the laptop :)

I post on another site and I had the same sort of problem, unless people are members they generally don't understand it all.

    This is true. It's unjustifiable

They're women so therefore don't understand how you can
be on the Internet. Everyone knows there is no women on the Internet

being in college doing IT, saying to my friends that i use/post/read boards is like saying "did you see that local sports team last night? what were they thinking?" to a scumbag.

This is considered Internet blogging which is becoming a major fad all over the world!!!
Its not weird, were all just keeping with the times...

Its better then reading some ****ty magazine, or rather its like a modern alternative.

Either way, people who in 2009 think its odd to post on/read internet forums are the odd/****ing ignorant ones.

It's called "networking" and it does not need justification.

I could see it becoming a problem if you are cancelling plans with family and friends in real life; in order to be on the internet.

Better than being a heroin addict.

    "what you doing?"

    "On the Internet"

    "oh.. ok"

    Simple really.

none of my friends use it and once when i mentioned it the looks and questions were enough for me to never mention it again. I think theres a stigma attached to it a.k.a "internet weirdos" but were not..

some people are amazed at my vast knowledge of topics from stingey things that people do to how much a classic 68 merc would cost but what i never tell them is that i steal it all off boards.ie

    mwahahahahhahahahahahahah!

I don't really have to explain to anyone -- no one asks! I'll admit -- I didn't "get" being on boards either until I was introduced by a boardsie. And, well, the rest is history.
