Ball position

I've seen and read conflicting views on this from different coaches and players.

Some (Butch Harmon, David Leadbetter included) have said keep a constant ball position for each club (driver to wedge) - just inside the left heel, and simply widen the stance for each club.

Other (David Leadbetter in one of his books!) say move the ball back for irons to ensure good contact.

I've always played irons back in the middle of my stance - probably explains why i hit the ball so low, and with a draw.
What does everyone here do? I'm particularly interested in the difference between the lower and higher handicappers.

I vary the ball position from the middle of my stance (pitching wedge) to just inside my left heel (driver). I've never considered doing anything else but maybe there is some merit in it.
