Recommend me some games for long bus journeys

I'm going to South America this summer for 3 months. Some of the bus journeys will be 20 hours + and I will probably spend over 100 hours on buses during my time there.

So I'm gonna borrow a friends DS and his ahem magic card, and stick some games on it. Id say I can fit 6, maybe 7 or 8 at max.

    I was thinking -

Grand Theft Auto China Town Wars
    Chrono Trigger
    Zelda Phantom Hourglass
    New Super Mario Bros
    The World Ends With You
    Advance Wars Duel Strike

    Any ideas ?

Also, i know that the battery life of the DS is going to be tested on my trip...its a first generation original DS. What kind of battery life do they have ?

Firstly, grab some spares batteries from DX Extreme.
    http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.13321
(They include a tool for taking the old battery out).
Charge them up before your trip, and you'll have enough to last a long time.

Original DS battery life is 8-10 hours I think (on lowest brightness).
Not sure how the screen will fare if its bright though - it might be hard to see whats going on. Playing at dusk/twilight and at night should be fine.

Games? The ones you've specified are great. Others I'd recommend:

    Suikoden Tierkreis (50+ hours, easily)
Henry Hatsworth (great game, and 15-20 hours to do everything)
Peggle Dual Shot (come on, its 2 peggle games!)
Elebits (great action RPG, 15+ hours)
3 Castlevania Games (10+ hours each)

Holy ****, that is very very cheap. Thanks a million! I might just buy 5 or 6 of those battery's. Even if they only last a few hours each..as it will only cost around 10 euro including shipping.

I'll look into those games also, cheers.

Did they ever release Super Mario All Stars on DS ?

Nope, and SNES emulation is patchy enough.

You could try NES DS though.... Stick on Mario 1,2 and 3 (and some metroid and kirby games while you're at it)

Yoshi's Island DS came out a few years ago, and its a worthy successor to the SNES original (pretty damn challenging too).

    I'd recommend:

Mario Kart DS - excellent time trial mode with very tough ghosts to beat.
Pokémon Platinum - stupidly addictive with lots and lots to do, but with a fair bit of grind. It'll eat up hours, though.
    Disgaea DS - see above.
Bangai-O Spirits - over a hundred tough little levels to dodge and shoot through. A bit overwhelming at first, but very addictive once you adjust to its way of thinking.
Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney, Justice for All & Trials and Tribulations - exciting and hilarious text adventures with about 40 hours of poking about and cross-examining between them.

I would have a look at the lego games, mainly lego batman, starwars and indiana jones
    Great games

I'd have to say go for the classics,
    Picross,
    CrossworDS,
    42 Classic Games,
they are really good ways to pass the time.

    Also excellent for passing the time are the following;
    Professor Layton,
    Geometry Wars Galaxies,
    Mario 64 DS,
    Ninja Gaiden DS,
    Tetris DS
    and
    TrackMania DS.

Can't overstate the need for the correct charger on the trip, and some sort of belt strap so some thieving feck doesn't make off with the DSlite.

I'm gonna go with the old favourite, Elite Beat Agents and a set of headphones! :D

Thanks for the suggestions thus far guys, I appreciate it. Another thought just struck me...I wont be alone on this trip. Might be good to get some multiplayer games that my amiga could play too. We will only have one DS though, so it would have to be a 'take turns' type of game. Also, shes not a gamer so would be very picky about what she would play!

Professor Layton and CrossworDS might fit the bill...anything else ?

How do you mean the correct charger ? A plug adapter ?

Yeah, just make sure that the DS charger you bring will work on what ever voltage they run down there, along with an adaptor to let you plug it in.
And the DS may be a relatively rare commodity in South America and may make quite a prize for a thief, so be careful with it.

Personally I'm not sure you want to spend large amounts of your trip ignoring your travel companion with the handheld, or more importantly perhaps, ignoting the scenery you are paying so much to see!

Oh dont worry, I'm sure there will be plenty of times when we are sick of each other and the scenery outside. One of the bus journeys is 52 hours...

    Holy cr@p!!!

Any back on topic...Professor Layton is pretty cool and addictive, Zelda is great as well.

Super Mario Bros you cant ever go wrong with and I believe Mario64 for the DS is an excellent variation from the original

What about Mario & Luigi superstar saga & partners in time ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,616 ✭✭✭✭Mr E

100% Yes Yes Yes. M&L: PIT is a brilliant game, completely forgot about it.

Check out the top 50 or so on this list and see if anything jumps out at you.

Superstar Saga is a GBA game, though....

I've got to second Pokémon Platinum. If you get really hooked on it, it could pass hundreds of hours. I maxed out the clock in the GB Pokémon Red, at 255 hours!

I assume the US version is out or someone leaked the code on the internet. Otherwise play.com are well off on the release date.

I would agree with your original pick of The World Ends With You. I bought it there at christmas. Played if for a few hours didnt really take to it and put it away.

I picked it up again recently and I'm sorry I didnt give it more of a chance first time round. Its easily one of the most refreshing and interesting games i've played in a good while.

Plus its one of the few games i've played on the DS that fels like it really utilizes the touch screen properly (instead of the majority that just feel liek they added on touch screen parts just because they could).

When you finish it then theres a bunch of challenges and unlocks you can go back to try and get (some of which are very difficult). It would take you a long time if you wanted to 100% it I'd say.

It can get a little repetitive though sometimes and the story can be a bit hit and miss. Still possibly my favorite DS game to date.
