Gamsat London Sept 2009

    Hey all,

First time poster, long time reader, I'm after sitting the GAMSAT exam in Dublin two weeks ago and although i like to hope i'll get offered a place for september, I'd consider myself extrememly lucky if i did knowing the little amount of prep i did.

Anyway the substantive part of this post is basically to look for information on applying to Universities in England through GAMSAT. I plan on sitting the exam in London in September to try and up my score, i'll use this to apply for for universities in England and also for Ireland in 2010. Although this is my intention i have not yet made a plan for how exactly i'll go through the whole application process or even where to apply.
If anyone has done this before and would like to share some tips or advice please feel free to be generous with your knowledge :)

    My basic concerns are
    1) Is there a large difference in Fees between Eng. and Ire.
    2) Will having studied in England make things more difficult for me in applying for jobs or training programs in Ireland once i'm qualified as a Junior?
    3) If i apply for England, will i have to decide on whether or not i accept a place there before the CAO offers for ireland come out in Aug 2010?
4? Does anyone know anything concrete about the possibility of a GEP in NUIGalway next year?

    Thank you for any replies.

To anyone else who is waiting for CAO offers this year, Best of Luck.

gonna be about 20 to 30 places, same criteria as other GEP's 2.1 in any discipline and GAMSAT. i'd imagine the competition for the places in gway will be fierce with so many science phd's and the likes in galway, contacted nuig a few months ago and they siad they were still in the early stages annd didn't know much themselves subject to funding ect.
Anyone know anything about the 2.1 restriction being dropped??

Hey. I will, most likely, be sitting the Gammy again in London in September. Going to wait until the results from the 21st are released and take it from there. One issue which I'm sure you are aware facing any applicant to a UK GMP is the requirement of relevant work experience. I think this something that many, if not the majority of colleges seek in applicants. I applied through UCAS for a couple of med related courses in the UK when sitting the leaving cert., and the interview and selection process was fairly focused on your exposure to the healthcare environment. I'm not sure of the specifics, but you can get detailed info on what colleges are looking for on the UCAS website.

Thanks for info about Galway... I'd imagine the competition will be fierce indeed, but sure all you can do is throw your name in the hat.
Best of luck in London dude.

Does anyone know the location of where the Gamsat in the UK takes place.

I'm missing a wedding to sit the Gamsat on the September 18th and I want to try and at least get back to Dublin for the reception, so trying to figure out what the best airport would be to fly into!

    Thanks

does anyone know what the lowest GAMSAT score people wre accepted on in UCD and RCSI last year? I just got my results an got 62 but have no idea if that is going to get me in anywhere? also if that would qualify me for an interview in England? and can't find any info on the internet, any info would be greatly appreciated, don't know if I should start getting excited yet or not!!

In a word yes but really depends on when you want to come back, the postgrad part has changed quite a bit

in Ireland Graduate you hve Internship registration, do this for 1 year and become fully registered

in UK when graduate you go into Foundation years 1+2, I am unsure if you woudl need to do both to end up at the same registration level as someone doing Internship here or can you come accross afetr 18 months, (couldnt come across after a year as they start later than us so you would miss the July changeover as you would not have finsihed a year by then)

If you wanted to come over for Internship that would be very difficult as there are not enough places for Irish grads of Irish medical schools at the moment though there are plans to change this

Many of the hospitals operate systems where the intern post application is tied to a particular medical school ie CUH and UCC, Vincets and UCD, RCSI and Beaumont etc

Last year 62 would have got you your first choice. This is a new year with new candidates but I would be very surprised if 62 was not an acceptable score.

    2008 cut-offs / averages:

    RCSI Final 58 Mid 62
    UCD Final 57* Mid 58
    UCC Final 56* Mid 57
    UL Final 55* Mid 57

    Best of luck
