Never mind more channels, Digital, Widescreen or HDTV.

I agree. We need more decent local TV. Not more chat shows, quizzes, reality TV or soaps either.

Get rid of all the over priced presenters that add no content and are in reality nothing more than ex RTE Radio 1 DJs (which shouldn't have any music, since there is 2FM and Lyric FM).

well behind that of Britain, where almost a fifth of its TV drama is produced nationally

Don't understand that at all. Whats the measurement based on? The 5 terrestrial channels? All channels on every platform? UK 5 drama is overwhelmingly home produced.

Irish tv can't afford much home prodcued drama - even the cheapest is vastly more expensive than the most expensive bought-in material.

Oh and Mad Men is not popular, it should be but its not.

That tiny article isn't about the amount of Television stations. It is stating a fact that the majority of Drama on Irish TV stations (RTÉ, TV3 and TG4 ) comes from abroad.

The 5 English stations have been diluted in recent years but over all the BBC, ITV and C4 seem to produce most of their Drama output. Five are no more than TV3. Of course when you look across the English set of channels most of their programming comes from the states.

Of course this isn't helped by James Morris when the IFB/BSE push money into big productions such as The Tudors.

Re: Radio 1 and Music my Mam was pointing out how she lost touch with modern music when 2FM started, many people don't flick around on their radio dial.

I will have to disagree with that if you are talking about the five terrestrials. It may be true for five and to a lesser degree Channel 4 and even then they show most of their American programmes on their digital only channels.

Ok either repeats or US programming. I am of course talking about E4, MORE4, FILM4, SKY1, VIRGIN1 etc.

Or else you get what we have seen in the last 10 years a dilution of programming across various channels owned by the one company i.e. BBC and ITV. Hence the dissappearance of Drama on English TV replaced by as you pointed out Reality trash television.

What about sales of Drama to other countries? Lack of risk in Irish TV IMO.

    I'm NOT talking about anything other than BBC1, 2, ITV1, C4, C5.

Why are you talking about five they produce very little drama.

Thinking about this further and I realise that even the BBC, ITV and C4 are doing less and less drama. C4's drama outside of Hollyoaks consists mainly of Shameless and Skins. ITV only really do soap now adays. The BBC seem to be getting worse.
