    Fixing my brothers computer -

After logging in the background appears, with nothing else, then a "windows explorer" error (it asks if I want to send the report, or not)
No matter what I click here nothing happens after it.

I followed the steps in the sticky. I only had access to SAFE MODE - as the above happens when I log in normally
step1) With the comedian it didn't do the final step - at final step, it could not create restore point
step2) mbam-log-2009-03-28 (23-15-26).txt is attached. Superantispyware would not install due to safe mode
steps3-5) windows service packs won't install
    hijackthis.txt is attached
    Rooter.txt is attached

    Any ideas?

no need to attach the logs, you can post them

Looking at your system now, one or more of the identified infections is a backdoor Trojan.

If this computer is ever used for on-line banking, I suggest you do the following immediately:

    1. Call all of your banks, credit card companies, financial institutions and inform them that you may be a victim of identity theft and to put a watch on your accounts or change all your account numbers.

    2. From a clean computer, change ALL your on-line passwords for email, for banks, financial accounts, PayPal, eBay, on-line companies, any on-line forums or groups you belong to.

Do NOT change passwords or do any transactions while using the infected computer because the attacker will get the new passwords and transaction information.

Before we begin, you should save these instructions in Notepad to your desktop, or print them, for easy reference. Much of our fix will be done in Safe mode, and you will be unable to access this thread at that time. If you have questions at any point, or are unsure of the instructions, feel free to post here and ask for clarification before proceeding.

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
    • Restart your computer
    • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
    • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
    • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
    • Choose your usual account.
    • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
    • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
    • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
    • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
    • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
    • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
    • Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum.

Before I tried your fix above I got windows XP pro and did a "repair" ... so the repair goes down the route of fixing the files, but now I'm stuck as I get:
"An error has been encountered that prevents setup from comtinuing. One of the components that windows needs to continue setup could not be installed. Manifest Parse Error: Invalid at the top level of the document. Press ok to view the setup log file".

    The log states the following:
    "
    Error:
sys.dll: systax error in manifest or policy file e:\i386\asms\msft\windows\gdiplus\gdiplus.man on line 0
    "

its got other stuff but this is mainly what it is... I'm going to source another xp CD to see if the CD is damaged. But because of this recovery thing I cannot get into safe mode as it complains about the recovery setup...

    Its screwed, isn't it? :|

strange error, I would give chkdsk /r a run from your windows cd, or a windows repair.

    try the steps here
