    :)
to get idea how economical car is.......looking more for owners feedback then manufacturers claimed figure ...specially for manual box cdt or cdti versions

The engine is the same as the one in the BMW 320d (although in the Rover it is slightly de-tuned). With mixed city and intercity driving I would expect at least 40MPG average. Same as most other cars in this segment really.

That's what I was getting in my 320d, and I think mine was a bit thirstier than normal.

mines a CDTI (131 BHP) AUTO
    never less than 35
50+ possible on m-way if you are careful
average about 40-45 (heavy left foot)
iirc the official figures for the auto are pretty spot on.
dont buy a manual. the auto box in the 75 is a million times better

the 75 is bigger than a 3 series. its length is exactly midway between a 3 and 5 series

What mileage is on yours? Honest John mentions problems with the Jatco autobox....
On automatics, a piston cracks and a 3rd to 4th gear problem shows up, then gradually spreads as the bits from the damaged piston spread. Reverse goes next. and soon there is no drive at all. Reconditioned JATCO 5-speed automatic transmissions £900 + VAT....

JATCO advises owners not to carry out AUTOMATIC transmission fluid changes themselves because it's difficult to ensure the correct amount is added (the gearbox needs to be run to a specific temperature - This requires diagnostic equipment) and probably they will use the wrong oil, e.g. Land Rover Discovery ATF is different from a Land Rover Freelander, and Jaguar X-Type (Jatco) uses different ATF to a Land Rover Freelander (Jatco).

I have one. I've never kept a record of mpg, but they have a good rep. for being economical, and I fill it up much less often than my old 2.8 petrol bmw (not that that means much I guess). Lots of useful info at http://www.the75andztclub.co.uk/forum/ and http://forums.mg-rover.org/ . Some relaxed motorway drivers claim easily into the 50's mpg.

The most expensive common fault is the clutch slave cylinder (on the manuals). If you test drive one, make sure it gets properly warmed up (it can take a long time), and then check that the gears engage smoothly. If buying privately, ask about the clutch, as a dodgy seller may have just topped up the clutch fluid, and you will have problems days/weeks down the line.

Beyond that, check that all the doors unlock first click, look for water/dampness in the boot or passenger footwell from dodgy seals, check it's still got 2 keys as a spare will cost you a few hundred Euro. An airbag warning light is probably just caused by a loose connection under the front seat, and if you get one check the plenum drain holes regularly, as they get bunged up with leaves etc, then flood and knacker the ecu to the tune of about a grands worth. That's all I can think of off the top of my head, theres probably more at the sites above.

There is nothing major wrong with the autoboxes. If it shifts smoothly when you buy it then changing the fluid in the proper manner with the correct ATF fluid keeps it reliable.
    Manual Clutches are genuinely troublesome.

85000 now (mainly motorway outside dublin). ive had it since 50,000.
changing the gbox fluid is on my list but ive not gotten around to it yet. the box is very smooth and infinitely better to drive than the manual version. to be honest, even if it clapped out and needed replacing, id still buy another. some things are just worth it.

    hi ,
slight correction. only the drivers door is supposed to unlock first click. press it again and all the rest open. a dealer settable option is for the doors to lock when you go over 5 mph.
my airbag light came on due to the electric drivers seat cutting one of the seatbelt pretensioner wires and was easily fixed.
ive also got a slight leak in the boot. its coming from one of the rear light clusters. again easy to fix and also common to a lot of cars

I got a Rover 75 taxi home on Friday night, driver said he gets around 35mpg around town and 45ish otherwise.

TAXI drivers in the UK use the car a lot. Not a popular taxi here in Ireland due to rarity.
