My thanks to the Mods for permission to post this.

The following is available to a GOOD home:

    Mercedes W126 S Class
    1990
    170k Miles
    Almadine Metallic. Cream interior.
    90 G 5101
    NCT expired 23/12/08
    Tax valid til 05/09
    Registration 90 G 5101

Here is everything that is wrong with it:

Reverse gear is slipping. Other gears are fine.
    Windscreen is badly cracked.
    Needs steering rods(?) changed.
    Drivers seat is slightly torn.
    Needs exhaust.

My car for last 9 1/2 years. 72,121 miles when I bought it.
Owned by Terry Lyons - Dublin Solicitor -before that. One other owner - Galway builder.
Maintainded by Greenmount Motors, Harolds Cross.
(Not a plug, I know they've been recommended here before for Mercedes servicing!)
Was used by me for chauffeur work for a number of years. SO yearly NCT's.
Towbar - used but lightly and infrequently.

Want it to go to someone who will make use of it either for everyday or to keep their own on the road.

I would not getting rid of it except that I need a van and makes no sense to have it and a van.

    Update.

Car is based in DUBLIN. Centrally, if that makes any difference.

Location may have a bearing for some people interested.

Car is taxed but NO NCT so not road legal. Was last driven on 23/12/08. Would probably drive but would prefer it it went from me on a trailer. Don't want to be liable for someone's misfortune/stupidity.

There have been a number of approaches both on and off forum.

I suppose the best thing would be for people to put their case.

In my mind, I had given preference to members of classic car clubs. Having said that, I would prefer to see it back on the road by whatever means. So, Junkyard, that still counts you in.

It it appears that I'm reluctant to give it away, you would be right. But go it must. It has to go to the right person. Free but not cheap, if that makes sense.

    Thanks.

OP I've seen Junkyards operation and like yourself he sold a car to me at a great price but insisted that it wasn't broken for spares and that it went to a good home. Which it duly did. Give it to him :)

I agree..he was first in too with his offer to buy. Iv seen pics of a few things he has restored too (the A55 in particular)and the work looks 100%.
Some times giving away a car is a bad idea as people will just take it for the sake of it.Big mercs need lotsa loving!!

    Hi thinkofaname,

As someone who sent you a PM putting in request for me to be the one to look after it, on reflection Junkyard would be the better option for the following reasons.

    1. He has the skills and facilities to do all the necessary work.
    2. He showed me how to do some restoration work last year on the wing of my 88 Merc 200 and never looked for any money for the time he put in with me. (He supplied material like fillers and the paint free of charge)
    3. If I got it I would be able to do the mechanical work but I have no garage and the bodywork could deteriorate further. Its bodywork that sends a car to the great scrapyard in the sky not the oily bits. Junkyard has indoor storage to do this work.

I have no connection with him other than the contact made through these boards and the subsequent arrangement we made to do a bit of restoration on a few Saturday mornings last year. I have not met him since but I can gaurantee you he will not sell the parts for profit.

I would love to get it myself but I would not have the same resources as Junkyard to tackle this right now.:(:(

I vote for Junky too, he helped me out recently too, got me something I couldn't get elsewhere and would accept payment !!

    Long live the W126 !

Only a taxi driver (or a farmer) would even think that! There used to be a small chain of engine shops that did only that sort of thing resulting in a generation of BMW 7 series featuring the 'wrong' 2.8 engine

    Anyone remember thier name?

Thanks for all your kind words everyone, I almost feel a bit embarrassed now! Seriously though, i'll give the car a good home and fix it up, I have most of the parts to repair it too.
What we should really do is set up our own classic car pool with cars like this, it might be worth considering, how workable it would be is hard to say but if people were genuine enough it might just work, has anyone else ant thoughts on the matter?

Anything to keep good old cars from being dumped. All I can bring to the equation is my time and willingness to try my hand at anything. I have done a fair amount of mechanical stuff in my driveway but that is fairly limited.

A place where we could keep a couple of cars that we could all access and work on. Of course the cars would have to be donated to the pool and each project could be sold on and injected back into other projects. Getting going is the only issue as some money would have to be invested at the beginning.

I know of a place outside Cork city that could store up to six cars securely for 300Euro month with full access 24/7. Among 6 people that would work out at 50/month. Maybe that would be too much of a financial drain but it would be great to something like this going.

    Hi,

Nice to see that people's efforts are sometimes recognised. Junkyard, if you still want the car let me know and we can organise collection.

If Junkyard decides not to take the car, then will re-offer.

Thanks to everyone for their interest and enthuaism.

    well done junkyard,
well wear. looking forward to the before and after shots.
I like the idea of the share too. Don't know much about restoration as haven't done it before but more than willing to learn so i'd be up for something like that

Junkyard, hope it looks as good in the cold light of day as it did when it arrived last night. Poor Dougie had a long drive home. Good luck with it.
