Should I ask for a raise?

I started with a company last year and I was to do a years probation, which is the longest probationary period anyone I've told has heard of. Anyway, it's almost up and the company will have to either let me go or take me on full time (permanent). I guess they could also extend the probation but I'd be very unhappy with that.

I can see that I've been rostered for weeks that are beyond the one-year cut-off point so I think they're going to keep me on. Usually this would mean a raise but what with the recession I'm a little worried about asking.

I took a big wage drop to take this job, should I just be happy that they're going to keep me on (if they are?) Or would you ask for a raise in my situation?

Standard Civil Service probation period is two years.

Is the company profitable? Are you making money for them? How does your current salary relate to market rates?

I don't know anyone who works in civil service.

Company is profitable, I'm making good money for them. I get less than our main rivals, but they're on shift and I'm not so they would get a bit more for that.

I'm being made permanent. Am I entitled to a raise to reflect this?

What difference does it make if you're on temporary or permanent? In short no, you have no entitlements because you're made permanent.

I think you should make sure that your permanency is done and dusted first. That you're given a permanent contract or at least a clarification on what your current status is.

The reason I was wondering is that in every previous job I've had I've always automatically got a raise when I've been made permanent so I wondered if this still applied. If it was a legal requirement or at the companys discretion.

The company I work for are very stingy though in general, recession or no.

Dont be going asking for too many raises before you are confirmed as pernamnet! Itd be a good excuse for them to say bye bye
