no specific arts subjects for the post grad, but things like Gaeilge that could help you in primary would prob be a good start.

Post grad courses are the subject of rumours of being cut.. but so far rumours only.

As to subbing ,as so many fully qualified primary teachers are unemployed ,you may find it very difficult to get work.

Have a look at the forums on www.educationposts.com

There are many fully qualified primary teachers looking for work at the moment, as well as those who will be qualifying in the coming months. With the present cuts and more coming down the line, there will be difficulties finding work in the next couple of years. For unqualified and inexperienced people, looking for substitute work is pretty unlikely. (Working as an assistant, perhaps in a voluntary capacity maybe but substitution no.)

subbing is very hard to come by at the moment, and since you are in your first year of a 3/4 year arts degree you don't have to think about subbing as your only option to get experience.

find out about coaching a local team, if you can play an instrument its an advantage, you could give lessons to children. is there any youth club/organisation in your area that you could volunteer to help out with? would you be able to go to the gaeltacht and help out as a cinnire/cuntoir?

not only would it help in applying for a place in mary i but it would add to a cv a few years down the road when you are qualified and looking for a job in schools.

Are you still thinking about primary teaching? It will be a hard slog but my advice would be rather than getting subbing as a teacher, you are far more likely to get some work as a substitute SNA or classroom volunteer.
