    Seems gonna be launching a month after the new petrol GTi. Its good regards the co2 and the cheaper tax but will it really take off?

    The ability to accelerate to 62 mph in 8.1 seconds and a top speed of 136 mph are combined with average fuel consumption of 53.3 mpg and a range in excess of 650 miles on a single tank of fuel to create a hot hatch of the moment.


    The Golf GTD’s appearance will differ significantly from that of the standard Golf’s. It gains the GTI’s honeycomb grille, badge-style and front-end design, though with the addition of chrome rather than red highlights. At the back, full body-coloured bumpers make the GTD appear lower and wider than it really is, while the Golf’s standard wheels are replaced with unique 17-inch ‘Seattle Black’ alloys. Inside, the main contact points are unique to the Golf GTD – a flat-bottomed steering wheel, a GTD gearshift and a standard tartan interior. The tartan finish is subtly different from that in the GTI, being grey, white and black, rather than red, white and black.


    UK buyers will be able to order a Golf GTD from the end of April. Prices are yet to be confirmed but will start at under £22,000. The car will go on sale on 22 June – exactly one month after the first GTIs hit UK roads.

    It may do very well. It wont be too long before a remap is available to bring it over 200bhp. Added to the cheaper tax (I assume, not sure what the new GTis C02 emissions are)

    The new gti is 170/173 while this diesel one is 139 g/km. So it would be 302 versus 630 euro for the petrol

    Slightly disappointed with the GTD to be honest. I was expecting an all new power output from the 2.0 TDI. Something in the region of 190-200bhp. Remember, the MK5 was available with pretty much exactly the same engine except that was PD instead of CR. It is good on emissions though to be fair

    Bit disappointed with the looks too for some reason

    And a fine car it was too.

    I've driven pretty much every variation of the golf there is and if I had to choose I'd always choose the petrols myself. While the VAG diesels are generally very good I still much prefer the feel and response from the petrols

    Was kinda my point for starting the thread, people that have been buying the gti, would they really switch to diesel

    Wheels aren't very impressive I don't think. It's just nothing compared to a GTI, it's just a sporty diesel.

    Wheels aren't very impressive I don't think. It's just nothing compared to a GTI, it's just a sporty diesel.

    You could dismiss a GTI as a dolled up Golf just as easy. Ive never been particularly enamored with them and Im a VAG fan, but they just arent that interesting if you ignore the hertitage. A GTI with a "hot" diesel engine is by and large the same car. VW will ensure that via marketing alone.

    The GTD has wife-approval-factor (hate that term). It combines some pretension of sportyness with the compromise of good economy. Its the perfect Golf for the times, something for the bored cubicle worker with the young family, a market VW have always appealed to.

    Im going to call it now, the GTD will handily outsell the GTI, garnering praise at ease from the pseudo motoring press. Look at how many of those retarded "GT" Golfs were around in the Mk5 era or "GT TDI's" in the Mk4 era, this will be big cheese.

    Agreed, but Knob cheese if you ask me. There's much more interesting metal to spend €'s on!

    Surely fully colour coded bumpers aren't a new thing, and isn't it more of a case of the standard Golf having half painted bumpers to make it look less lardy than it actually is?

    The thing I find most interesting about this car is that it will actually sell for less than the GTI, instead of the usual pattern of a diesel costing a good deal more.

    For once, driving a diesel might actually be cheaper than driving a petrol powered car of equivalent performance. Hang on a minute, 0-100 in 8.1? - well there goes that idea ;)

    Agreed. This isn't really a GTi diesel is it. Its more akin to the GT (not the GT SPORT that replaced the sportline) spec Mk V that could be had with either the 1.4 petrol or 2.0 diesel both with 170 brake...nothing new really with it
