ie cross country running when you're up to your ankles in mud. I do all my cross country training in hilly fields, intervals, tempo runs, long runs. But then come race day if there is ankle deep mud fellows beat me who I'd beat on the same course if it was a bit drier - any training tips, or is it just a natural thing?

Actually been thinking about that myself a good while ago, I always tended to do better on in the mud then flat.. even in the XC prior to christmas I beat people that I hadnt beaten at that stage.

Not sure if its a factor but I used to do alot of running on sand and soft sand dunes and found that that really helped come XC season. I found the sand was like dry mud :)
