DVD playback giving me a tiny picture

I bought a couple of movies recently (very cheap on Sendit) - Tremors and Memphis Belle. Anyways on my set up - PS3 - Onkyo 875 a/v amp - 46 inch Samsung Series 6, I'm getting a small 4:3 picture onscreen that gives me a large black border all around the movies during playback. I've tried adjusting the screen size manually (its normally set at Pan and scan) but all this gives me is a picture stretched from top to bottom with very large black bars on the sides.

Is there a way to fix this as its bloody annoying and I love these 2 movies. BTW the DVD cases say the movies are anomorphic widescreen and when I tried them in my old DVD player on a Philips 32 inch crt widescreen tv, they worked fine (i.e. widescreen) so I'm guessing its a problem with the Samsung and/or amp set up. All my other DVDS and Blu Rays display properly on the Samsung so I can't figure out why Tremors and Memphis Belle are displaying the way they are.

Sounds like there's some sort of dot by dot mode turned on somewhere in your chain of devices.

It sounds like an upstanding issue between the PS3 and you 875.
Take you amp/ player away from direct and enable up scaling on the 875/PS3.
