Getting movies onto the Nano

I'm using vlc to transcode avi files, so they'll play on my nano. The output from vls killed my win box quicktime, so.... what are the odds, that if I transfer the same output to the nano, it'll simply kill the nano? rendering it useless? How do you guys get movies onto the nano? Cheers

Handbrake, http://handbrake.fr/

You can pick the output format by device i.e. ipod, apple tv, ps3
