Thread here on the proposal to 'etag' sex offenders.

Now I know little about the subject but it would strike me as a good idea. There is a lot of noise on the other thread and I was wondering what you guards think? Having more experience and more knowledge about this subject? Is it a good idea?

Well considering the advantages of E-Tag it would certainly help to keep track of sex offenders but there are some disadvantages to it.
As pointed out on the other thread it would have to be a secure system, maybe have it part of the new Tetra system which is an encrypted system. Also any drawbacks of the system such as intentionally preventing a signal from the device to the base would need to be fully explained to each person wearing the device and severe penalties for those who break those rules.
Also the E-tag would and should not be considered a bee all and end all in any invesitgation. An example would be a sex offender in the area where a sexual assault took place. Having that person as the sole suspected offender and no one else considered would leave that investigation wide open for the wrong person being brought in for interviewing.

That was the reason why I posted here!

Child abuse generates are a very strong emotional response and hence there is an awful lot noise drowning out any signal on that thread.

Edit: They have tagging in the UK right? For early release and all that. Do you know how successful that is?
