Old Raleigh Scorpio Upgrade, Help Please!

    Hi everybody,

I found an abandoned, beat-up old Raleigh Scorpio a few months back and would like to fix it up. Internet tells me it was built in Ireland, circa April 1979.

I plan to turn this into a low-maintenance single speed and would much appreciate your advice. My first build too.

Currently I'm pondering what to do with the bottom bracket.

Not sure what to go for here. This is an old Raleigh, with 26 threads per inch threading and 71 mm shell width. I've heard it's quite difficult to find a sealed cartridge for this size, so I'm considering re-threading to 24 tpi.

I've also read on Sheldon Brown that I could order Phil Woods, but seems quite expensive.

    Any opinions?

Is it completely knackered ? You couldn't get away with replacing the ball bearings ?

Have you tried e-bay? There is often new old stock there so you might get a retro bb.

Gavin, the cups are looking fine, although I could only get the left-hand side cup out, the other's quite fixed... so I could probably just go with new bearings. Still would need some kind of modern cotterless BB spindle, with square tapers so I can get a new crankset, and that would be the right size for the old BB shell.

Would this be easy to find in a bike shop? Maybe I've overestimated this problem!

Somefool, I've heard ebay is good, and I may have to end up looking there alright.

Not to be too discouraging, but unless the frame is in exceptionally good condition - could you really be bothered?

What is gained over buying a cheap new Raleigh?

Good point. I was planning to turn this old Raleigh into a single-speed racer, something I can zip around on without having to worry about gears or maintaining them.

Surely I could do this build cheaper than buying a brand new bicycle, right?

@Morgan, don't worry I'm not discouraged (yet). It's a little project for me to work on, while I wait for the parole officer to call you know.

Well if the point of the project is just doing the project itself, for fun and just to see how cheap you can do it. Then that reason enough.

Haven't seen many used road bikes for sale. Most seem to be MTB's. I would have like to try an old racer style bike for my commute.
