So whats up with this anyways? I know they havnt turned it on fully yet and there was a problem with it that needs to be fixed.

I guess we'll have to wait a bit longer before we all get sucked into a black hole :(

For a second there I thought it said yes, started panicking, looked up and saw a massive hole. Just a hole in the ceiling though.

I think I might start becoming a long distance runner, goodness knows I'll need it when black holes start coming for us! Run it out!

Something happened it during testing, as far as I am aware. Going to cost a fortune to fix it and funds are low is what I have heard. Something to do with the magnetic fields they use to deflect and change the direction of the particles AFAIK.

It's going to blow up and everyone is going to die, this will happen in december 2012... ;) wait and see...

It's a joke tbh. How long was it running for before it broke? This thing has cost more than $7 Billion and it's predesescor RHIC has found practically nothing of use in 10 years. But I guess endeavourment is what drives science, and there's nothing wrong with that

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 112 ✭✭Exneigh

It needs to be chilled to a couple of degree's from absolute zero.. so any f*ck ups mean it must be defrosted, which takes a couple of weeks, then fixed and frozen again... sounds like great fun!

as for the the black hole stuff.. its rubbish spread by anti science Christian nut jobs.

Yea, so far from the official day that was the start up, they have had to postpone the thing twice now.
While I'm all for tech research, I am a little nervous (hopefully unjustifiably) about this massive thing.

How familiar are you with quantum physics ?

Just cos discoveries aren't published in the front page of the Evening Herald doesn't mean they aren't being made.

In science, NOT discovering something is still a positive result as it could disprove a theory and mean theorists have to revisit their ideas.
The days of making huge scientific leaps out of the blue are gone... most scientists seem to publish papers fast to claim incremental credit for discoveries.

    :D

Do we really need to know whatever the f**k it is they're looking for? And why is it so f**king dear?

Surely it's not as important as gravity and all that cost was Newton taking a day off work the fat bastard. Ffs, as Karl Pilkington once said, 'gravity wasn't even a problem.'

    Gravity IS the issue.

The main problem is trying to tie gravity into quantum physics theory/equations.
They suspect there is a particle called the Higgs Boson, which would fit nicely into their theorists model of the universe.

Finding a "theory of everything" could lead to serious breakthroughs.
In the same way that splitting the atom gave atomic power, a theory of everything could lead to new tricks to create clean free energy.

Is a TOE as formidable as it sounds?
Used to read about this (never really understood it tbh).

But is it like the end of physics as we know it?

Would it be like Einsteinian physics superseding Newtonian physics?

Restart Sept/Oct, Collisions Oct/Nov, winter running this year, full luminosity I think early 2010 or did the OP want an actual answer?

p.s. The Higgs' Boson is NOT the only thing the LHC is looking for, hell I think you could say 90% of people working on the 4(6) experiments based around the ring (the LHC is just a machine which accelerates particles and collides them, nothing more, nothing less) have no interest in the Higgs

:D Thats actually part of what they are looking at :D

The problem is with one of the gigantic magnets. It needs to be replaced and could take a while.

    There'll be one.
    They'll be merged.
It's all part of the new clarity we have discovered as AH mods through numerous long PM conversations.
Yep. A bit of New clear fusion is what we all need here.

    Yes.

As the saying goes "If you think you understand quantum physics then you really don't understand it".

Even something like quantum entanglement messes up everything we know.
That's not even including trying to merge the gravity equations (special relativity) and the quantum physics equations into the same model.

Look at it this way... we're trying to understand the internal structure of atoms by smashing them together and detecting the bits flying apart.
That's like firing two clockwork watches together with two cannons aimed at each other and trying to photograph the bits flying apart. Then try identify the bits and what they do !

There are currently two webcams online

    * Camera 7: looking at the Underground Experimental Cavern from the Saleve side.
    * Camera 8: looking out of the window of the 1st Floor of the SCX building that houses the CMS Control room. There are two hot lesbians going at it across the way.

on the waterford forums sully has a 'theory on everything', maybe scientists should look there.
