Deposit on car - would Credit Card be acceptable?

Would it be acceptable to pay a deposit on a second hand car (at a main dealer) by credit card? Say, a deposit of 2 grand or so?

Last car I bought, I paid a deposit by cheque. Everything went fine, but I'm just thinking with the prospect of dealerships going out of business at present, I wouldn't want to end up on the bottom of the creditor's list if the company folder before I picked the car up.

We ordered tiles from a company that then went bang the year before last, but because we paid the deposit by CC, we could claim the money back from Visa with no hassle at all - and the experience has made me wary of handing over large sums of cash up front, given the protection Credit Cards offer.

When collecting the car, I'd then pay the balance with cash/draft/magic beans or whatever they wanted, but at least I'd have the keys then.

    Any thoughts?

Should be fine. Some garages may charge an addition 3% due to CC charges on their end ... no harm to be aware of that.

    That would be fair enough.

    Thanks all.

I put a deposit on my purchase up north on cc during the week. Good point above about the charges - I was happy to leave £1000 or whatever as a deposit, but we agreed on £250 to reduce the charges on it which he'll pay. Thought that was decent of him - he could have insisted on a large deposit and passed the cc charge on to me.

Any good car dealer should take credit card for a deposit payment. I'd not be willing to deal with them if they didn't. The rest I'm paying with a sterling draft.
