There are very few doing mobile diagnostics for Mercedes to a high enough level to be able to diagnose this and even fewer who can source the required parts to fix it.

    What year is the car?

    its a 00 E240 EDIT: its W210 body.

Ok, being a 2000 it’s a 210 body which has an electronic key.

    Next questions –

Is does the central locking work with the button on the key, either from a distance or if the key is held close to the door handle?

Can you confirm also if there is any noise when the key is placed into the ignition?

Were there any other symptoms? Any other electric/electronic systems playing up before the ignition failed?

i cant say what it was doing before hand because i bought it as is . the key wont do anything at all and there no noise's from the steering column, i take your referring to the steering lock it's self?

the l.e.d on the key blip's(it has a good battery) but there's no response from the car at all.

Ok, you need a new key, (assuming you have not been messing with the key at all).

Reading between the lines I suspect you have been told that you may need a new ignition switch, aka EZS aka EIS. A lot of people will insist on ordering both keys and switch but if its only the key there is no need for the switch.

The next problem, assuming yoo choose to believe what I have told you, is ordering the new key. To order a key you will need some information which has to be read out from the car with a startester (factory tool) and you need someone who the dealer will accept the order from. You will also need to supply proof of your identity and ownership of the car.
The other option is to have the car towed to the dealership where they will order the new key, unless they insist on fitting a new switch too, which often happens. The price difference is about €800.

yea the story i have been getting all right , the only other problem i think i might have is the fact its a uk car still on yellow plates.

thanks for the responses its all ways good to get a second opinion. would you recommend anyone to do this ?

Being a UK reg should not be a problem as long as its registered in your name and you can prove that. If not you have a problem.

In my opinion the best thing that you can do is to contact the nearest dealer and explain the situation. Ask them if they will supply a key before they order the EIS. If so get it towed in, if not then give me a shout and I will see what I can do for you.
