OK so I managed to get an incorrect amount of taxback from the revenue (basically they seem to have counted my tax twice and refunded one). So now I have a cheque for almost 2.5k in my hand which *I will be returning* but before I do I'm very temped to have a little fun. The Lotto Easter Millionaire Raffle is only 2 weeks away and the odds (when you have 112 tickets) seem pretty good! So the choice is . . .

    a) return immediately and wipe my hands
    b) say nothing 'till ya hear more or
    c) buy 112 tickets - pray you win - forfeit the loss if you do or . . . win and after repaying what I owe . . . pocket the difference?

    €1,000,000 - 1 in 150,000 (1 in 1400)
    €100,000 - 1 in 60,000 (1 in 536)
    €10,000 - 1 in 6,667 (1 in 60)
    €5,000 - 1 in 3,750 (1 in 33)
    €1,000 - 1 in 3,000 (1 in 27)
    €500 - 1 in 1,000 (1 in 9)

    What to do . . . 14 votes

Send the cheque back asap with apology and tears

Put it in a draw and await to be contacted

I got back €2508.11 and I spent every red cent of it.

I did more for the economy in a week than FFail will do in a decade.

You've clearly figured out how to beat the lotto there. Kudos to you, I dunno why someone didn't think of it sooner.

If I'd figured out how to beat the lotto I wouldn't be sharing it with my *ahem* friends here :D Was just asking as a shot in the dark as theoretical question, for giggles etc :p

You should bet it all on black. Not roulette btw. I mean in the event of a race war.

Indeed, I'm no maths wizz, but it seems by your calculations that your chances of winning double each time you buy a ticket.

    You've beat the system imo.

its a raffle so his maths are correct. if it was the lotto it would be a different story.

If you buy these lotto tickets and if you win, how much are you going to give to your "friends" here on Boards?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,012 ✭✭✭✭thebman

If you buy the tickets and you lose, the national lottery is owned by the state so you'll already have paid them back :)

    From their website:
An Post National Lottery Company is licensed to operate the National Lottery by the Minister of Finance on the Minister's behalf in accordance with the National Lottery Act 1986.

    edit

If you win, you can pay them back the difference and be a good citizen.

    d) advertise tax error (and amount, thus roughly dating the error) on the most widely-read forum of one of the biggest boards in the country.

    You missed an option.

lol, yeah but unless the users name is actually littlemissmoon offline they won't be able to catch them.

And boards can't really hand the information over since the user technically hasn't done anything wrong. They could be miscalculating themselves and actually be due the money. They only have a moral obligation to report it not a legal one *as far as I know, subject to being wrong

Ah I know that :p . . . . hence why the figures are very inaccurate. As I said in my original post, I will repay the money, I'm not a tax dodger and I believe in paying into the communal pot. I only wanted a little Friday morning fun

PS . . .My real name actually is Littlemissmoon but I'm not telling you where I live! he he he

Maybe some revenue jobsworth may read this and decide to double check any recent rebates in that amount range. :D

Amusingly, if somebody was on here (even jokingly) asking for information on fraudulent dole claiming, the resident Thatcheries would be reaching for the social welfare grass-up line, pronto, and preaching the usual homilies.

Pocketing erroneous tax rebates would seemingly be OK though. :)

Well the person isn't going to like they said. if they win they pay it back, if they lose, the national lottery owned by the state gets their money back. Its win/win.

It will be discovered OP; the good news is that it will be taken off your tax credits over five years. Effectively you have an interest free loan.

Use the money to buy prize bonds. When the government say you have to give the money back, you can say guilt free that you did.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 784 ✭✭✭marzic

sensible advice: put it in prize bonds, see if you win, if you dont you still have the cash should they come looking for it!

dodgy advice: go across the border and buy 2.5k worth of cigarettes, so when they go up in the budget, you'll be able to sell below rrp and have a few bob and the original cash, should they come looking for it!

keep it girl, on the off chance it is discovered you can nominate the amount to pay back weekly. 1 euro a week for the next 2500 weeks sounds about right.
    buy the tickets
