Lads and Ladies any help would be greatly appreciated..

The electrics in the drivers side door of my car(02 Audi A4) are gone, windows, mirrors and safety locking switch, at first i thought it was a fuse problem so i referred back to the manual to get the fuse location and replaced the fuse but they are still not working, I failed an NCT yesterday for only this reason, can anyone shed any light? Do the electrics just go after time? could it be water damage that got into the door panel? can i fix it myself? and if i bring it to a garage is it gonna cost me a fortune???

    Thanks in advance,
    ST;)

my first thoughts is that the connectors in the door has come loose.
When you open the door, there's a rubber pipe that contains the wires. Its located on the inside panel of the door.

this pic is off a VW but its just to give you an idea. The pipe I'm talking about is circled in RED.

The rubber pulls back and you should be able to see the connectors.
Check to make sure they're in. You should also have a look in the connector and check for rust.

oh btw you don't need to take off the door panel. That's just the first pic I found. Once you open the door you'll be able to see that rubber pipe

Check to see if someone tried to break in - some cars unlock when the wiring to the door is cut so nasty people often cut the wiring loom with a hacksaw blade.

You may have a problem with the door control unit which is built into the motor assembly. It's the black box above the motor in the pic above. I've seen them pack in before. Water ingress is a common fault in this area on Skodas

This a common problem on VAG.

    The windo regulatro goes.

It is the full metal part on the inside of the door.

I got one for a passat from VW belgard motors about 90 quid 3 years ago.

Lots of DIY excplanations on how to do this on the web.

I did it myself, with limited tools.

You need torque bits and socket set and a drill to get off the speaker.

All the connectors unclip a little fidley but a few hours whould do it.

Job had a big stores I was able to drive into which helped.

I don't think the reg is the OPs problem - his mirrors have stopped along with the c/l switch. Sounds more like an electrical fault...........

Then fuses would be my first port of call.

Lads thanks again for all the input, had a look at the connection from the door to the car but cant see anything odd, my next avenue is to take the door panel off would this be advised or should i bring it to a garage and get it done, also in case this helps the passenger door electric window isnt working but the little LED/light on the electric window button/switch is illumnated.. The LEDs/lights on the Drivers door are not illumnated..

Ill check the fuses again but already had a look and they seem ok..

    Cheers again..

I've only worked with my passat but they are very similar to the A4. Taking the door card off is not a though job but its a slow job when you do it for the first time. There's lots of screws and clips to find and cables to disconnected.

You'll need a philips head screw driver, a Star head screw driver, not sure of the size, and maybe a flat head screw driver too.

This http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=1015107 is where I took the photo from in my first post. It has details for VW door cards but I can't see the A4 being much different.

I had the exact same problem with my '01 A4 and I took it to Sheehy's in Naas, where they tried one or two things and it turned out that it was the control unit that someone has mentioned before that was gone. It's not a big job to replace, an hour or so's labour will do it and I paid around €300 for the part iirc, a "drivers door convenience unit" I think it was called. Same thing as you, I needed it to work to pass the NCT.

Common problem with Audi btw. Does your central locking work by turning the key and not when you press the button by any chance?

Yeah DJ the central locking works for every other door except the drivers door where i have to use the key!!!

€300 jesus i didnt think it was gooa be that serious..

Is Sheehys an Audi garage? surely this can be done by a normal priced garage the price does be inflated by hundreds in Audi garages..

Its more than likely the black box as shown above in your door (90 euro) or it the comfort control unit (300 euro). Your probably best going to an auto electrician with that. He will find the problem very quickly
