Scraping exhaust - suspension buffers

    Hi Guys

My first time here so be gentle if I ask a question that is obvious and already covered in many threads.

I own a 250 ce built in 1970. The suspension is very soft and sometimes bottoms out when going over bumps etc. I was with a mechanic today who mentioned that he remembers something he thought was called a suspension buffer (rubber) that would heighten the suspension by a good bit.

Does anyone know what this is and if they are still available. I don't want to scrape my exhaust any more!

    I am based in Dublin.
    Many thanks in advance.

Yeah all Mercs of this era have rubbers at top and bottom of their springs. The top oines control the ride height and come in various thicknesses. The springs are originally colour coded, two dots or stripes of a bright colour like red/blue/yellow.These may have worn off or the springs changed but if you clean off the could you may see them.

If they are original they may have deteriorated and will need replacing. There is a specification for each model usually measured along the sill area both side front and rear. You should check yours to see what it is, and if even.

Apart from this there are different springs avaialble for different options, markets etc., and over the years all springs will sag. It should be noted that repacing the buffers will not change how soft/firm the ride is, only the springs and shocks will do that. Do the bounch test, lean on the car and try to bounch it up and down as much as possible, when you stop and let go it should settle immediately. If it doesn't then your shocks are worn out and should be replaced in pairs with a good quality component.

If there are noises from the suspension then you will most likely need new bushes.

    Good luck !

    Thanks for the advice.

I will check the car when I get it back from my mechanic. Was driving it today to test if a new thermostat was working and the breaks just went soft on me. He is checking it out. I am meant to be going on a stag tomorrow in convoy with a few mates in some of our old cars. Looks likely I will miss out. I have driven this car all over the country on my own. As soon as I want to go on a trip or convoy it fails me everytime. I think she likes to be on her own.

Can you recommend a good place to source quality parts here. How will I know which parts will suit the car and be right for the suspension should I need to change them.

    All the best

    RichB
