    Hey,

I'm kinda basically looking to expand my punk knowledge more and wanted to hear some good 80's sounding punk bands. They don't need to be from the 80's but its cool as long as they have that 80's punk sound. Which means, i'm not looking for bands like Green Day and Rancid. Also not looking for any hardcore punk bands like Minor Threat or Black Flag, as i'm quite familiar with that genre (and my old band was Hardcore Punk!). So just some straight forward 80's style noise!

Been listening to a lot of Sex Pistols, Stiff Little Fingers, Clash and Ramones lately so need some more bands to add to the variety!

    Cheers guys!

I'd second dead kennedys. Get yourself fresh fruit for rotten vegetables and plastic surgery disasters. Frankenchrist has a few good tunes on it as well.

Also pick yourself up a copy of somery by the descendents. great 80's pop punk/hardcore band. some fantastic stuff there. don't bother with any of their 90's stuff as it's s***e.

zen arcade by husker du is also well worth a listen

I'm sure anyone who's familiar with Minor Threat and Black Flag knows the Dead Kennedys tbh.

Give some of this a listen. Old Irish anarcho ****...

yeah, i think they are one of the few bands going around that still can go back that far for sound and influence, like bad religion in a way. melodic hardcore, satirical words, all goes back to the 80s

and ya get a chance to see them here soon too, can't say that about a whole lot else on the list except for paranoid visions

uk subs, couldn't do this without charlie harper all over it

    The Buzzcocks
    The Damned
    Descendents
    The Misfits
    Television
    Stiff Little Fingers

And if you wanna expand this into 80s post-punk bands:
    Joy Division
    Talking Heads

    American stuff.
The Germs, Circle jerks, Minutemen, X, etc.
Fugazi, though you're probably aware of them. Infact you may be aware of all of these. Don't think they're considered hardcore; may well be though, not too big on labels.
Guess it's up to you if you consider them good sounding or not.

Ahh, cheers guys. Thats quite a lot of bands for me to check out now!

I do quite like DK, Jello is a legend!

But yeah, thanks guys! I'm looking to start a punk band and i needed some fresh inspiration to write down some 80's sounding proper punk songs and such. I'm really not into the 90's pop-punk sound of Greenday, Rancid and even NOFX to an extent, just like the old 80's style harsh, raw and aggressive punk. Among the modern day mainstream punk bands Rise Against is the only one i can think of who's got that raw and aggressive edge to them (or atleast had with their first 3 albums!).

Anyways cheers guys and hopefully soon i should be able to add to the punk scene in Dublin! :D
