I am not a make up fiend at all, easily two weeks could go by with me
putting on any but I need a new lippy, been using the same colour/brand
for years and I want to get recommendations for a good bright red long lasting
    lipstick/gloss.

What do you use and why ?
What do you think is rubbish ?

For red lipstick I don't usually use a 'stick' at all. I have IsaDora's Lip Makeup Quartet in 64, Red Bloom. You get three gorgeous red shades and a pinky neutral shade. Each of the reds are distinctly different, one is a pinkish red,one is a brick red(with a very slight sparkle) and one is a darker red(slight sparkle again). The sparkle/shimmer really isn't that noticeable and helps the colours from looking flat imho, I normally go for matte colours but love these! The neutral shade is just an added bonus for me really, I guess it'd be good for daytime, but I dunno as I just wear whatever I feel like and have a fondness for dramatic make up. :p They all have a similar consistancy to lipstick, they are definitely not glosses(gloss just pisses me off!) and are not very sticky. I highly recommend this product, I didn't buy it but IsaDora wouldn't be outrageously expensive anyway, and you are getting four different shades rather than one. They don't run out quickly either, you don't need much as the colour payoff is excellent. Sorry if this is ridiculously long but I LOVE this product!! :)

I like the mac lipsticks (ask for the Dita Von Teese one)

Whichever you go for you should get Lipcote from boots or She-lac from Benefit. these mean you can eat drink and kiss and your lippy will stay put! Stings a little when you put it on - make sure your lips arent cracked! i cannot recommend this product enough!!

I'd be a MAC lipstick fan aswell, in my opinion the colours are amazing, only thing is they do rub off easily enough, I must look into getting some lipcote/shelaq soon.

A nice red colour that they do is Russian Red, but go in and ask them what colour they think suits you best.

Another nice lip product they have for lips is called Lustreglass, it's more of a gloss but there's some very pretty colours and it's less dramatic that red lipstick if you want to tone it down a bit.

Bobbie Brown is also meant to do nice lipsticks, and Armani.

I am in love with the red lipstick I got from Bobbi Brown. I'm not sure on the shade but it's perfect. The tone you need will really depend on your skin tone. Your best bet is to trott over to BT and go to MAC or Bobbi Brown and get them to do all the work at picking for ya :)

This thread discusses red lipstick at length. If you have the patience you'll hopefully find something here! http://www.specktra.net/forum/f188/red-lipstick-24499/

Lancome's colour fever range have a lot of different types of bright red lipsticks.
They also have this new lip gloss ''la laque fever'' and it is brilliant. It is really long lasting. Better then any lip gloss I have had before and I have had a lot.

I only use Russian Red - its a 'true' red - not too orange, not too blue, and it suits almost all skin tones and hair colours because of that. Its the one that Dita uses. :)

Laura Mercier do a lovely red shade also. The lipstick itself has a very could consistency and pigment and is very longlasting.

It's deffo the best red I've ever come across!!

+1 for MAC's Russian Red here. It's by far the best red lipstick I've used. Rimmel has a decent one too, number 170. It's a bit brighter and more creamy than the MAC one.

I picked up one of the new Chanel Rouge Allure Laque lippies on Friday and am in love with it - its pricey though - €30.50 so will have to keep for good wear but its a mixture between a gloss and lippy and leaves a nice stain on your lips so you dont have to keep reapplying all night!

Maybelline do a lovely blue toned red shade too. I love red lipstick!
Have a go at a few shades and see what you prefer colour-wise :)

Russian Red is fantastic...get the matt one and put on a layer first and really blot it down then top it up and if you do want gloss use a little bit of Russian Red lipglass.

I went to the Chanel counter in BT's and dealt with a lovely girl called Louise. As I have dark red hair and fair skin I thought it best to get professional advice on what would suit my skin tone.

I got a lipgloss for work, the range is Aqualumiere and the colour is no 65 - Party Red. I got a lipstick for going out, the range is Rouge Allure and the colour is Lover. The lipstick is a much stronger red than the gloss and I really love it. I also got a lip pencil called Carmin, which goes with them both.

I think these colours would suit most complexions actually, I just wanted to make sure I didn't get something that would clash with mine!

I am finding red lipstick very empowering by the way!

I bought Maybelline Empire Red 536 of the Satin Collection. It's a lovely red without orange or pink tones
