Service intervals

    A simple question:

Go buy the time...e.g, every two years?

    or

Go buy the mileage alone,... say every 10k? (I dont remember off the top of my head)

I've always gone by mileage alone, but I don't exactly tend to cover that much mileage. One thing, is that the cambelt should've been done 2 years ago, according to the service interval, but it's only reached about 45k so far. The cambelt is supposed to be done after 5 years, or 72k miles.

At the rate I go through, it's be about 2-3 years to get to 72k

    It's an interesting dilemma.

Especially because if the cambelt goes bang.... that's a death-sentance for this thing.

What car (make/model/engine type/year) do you have?

I deliberately didnt say, becaust mentioning Renault on this board is considered trolling.... or so I was told. I just didnt want to start another fuss over it...

    But since you asked.

02 Renault Laguna 02... 1.8 engine. About 40-odd thousand miles on it. Runs fine.

I'd agree with colm_mcm, whichever comes first.

Brake fluid degrades over time, and should be changed every two years. I'm sure other components (tbelt etc.) would also "age".

As colm stated - whichever comes first.

But I do remember that Renault revised down the timing belt change interval on some Lagunas around 2000-2003. IIRC, it was revised down to 44k miles. I can't remember whether it was all engines or just certain types. Check with a Renault dealer for specific intervals relevant to your engine.

I think its been said already, but get it serviced at whatever comes first.

As for the cambelt, i'd get it done asap, and its likely to go any day now if its due the last two years. I'd prefer to fork out four or five hundred quid now, rather than alot more a few months down the line.
