Let go while traveling, what to do?

    Looking for opinions,

Just been told I have been made redundant.
Thing is I have just travelled to west coast of U.S. on assignment.
I have the choice of seeing out the assignment (2 more months),
or come home pretty much next week and finish up.

Staying gets me 2 months more wages/expenses but also means I'm out of the country while trying to apply for jobs etc.

    Fire away.

Sorry to hear that. Take the work. You probably won't be getting many interviews in truth but you can still go to all the agencies on-line. Make those expenses count for two months.

Absolutely agreed. One sixth of a year's work is not be sneezed at, especially if it's well paid. Save hard. Possibly job-hunt in the country you're in, too, you might be able to find a company there to sponsor you (since they've had to bring you in now).

Looking at your location and your previous posts, I could probably guess who you work for and where you are. :)

Stay, without question. Enjoy it while you can. Make the most of it.

don't come home under no circumstance whatsoever

finish your job there and get some contacts and get some work lined up in the states or interviews.

absolutely nothing here for you boy

    It doesn't work like that.

If I am correct in assuming I know what company he works for, he is there for a fixed duration, learning about a new product/technology with a view to bringing it back to the place in Ireland.

There is pretty much no scope to stay there, except under certain, very rare, circumstances.

I know, I've done it a couple of times with that particular company.

Correct Tom,(green though, not blue;)) I have a blanket visa which only allows me to work over here for this company.
I can stay and finish the two month assignment or go back to Ireland.

Thanks for the advice folks, I'm going to stay and take them for every dollar possible.Increases the redundancy package slightly too!

    Cheers

Don't spend any of you own money on expenses on behalf of the company.
There is always a danger you won't be re-imbursed.

    Colour me cynical.

Stay and also register immediately with FAS and also register online for jobseekers allowance (waiting list 9-13 weeks now...) with Welfare.ie.
Look for training course suitable for upgrading your skillset to better meet the needs of future job positions.
I do not know your job or the nature of your work but I cannot understand why they are letting you continue your assignment in the U.S if it is training for a job you won't be doing when you come back to Ireland.
Are you training or actually doing some work out there which your company is getting immediate use out of?
I didn't think the U.S let people in to do work but only let them in to acquire skills for use in their home country.
For what it is worth things are bad over here but the government knows it and is being more forthcoming with training and development opportunities for the right people.
Now is the time to get those skills and be ready for the next upswing.

I don't see any benefit to coming back early for you.

Do you think the job situation would be even worse in 2 months time and you want to start looking now ?

That was partly it, but i'm going to stay and get working on putting applications in.If anything does happen, probably would take a while anyway.

Its a daily allowance, and I claim it weekly just in case!
I also have one of their laptops as ransom :D
