I've signed myself up to do the Focus Ireland triathlon on the August bank holiday weekend with a team of guys from work. Needless to say, I'll be doing the bike leg.

Now, I don't have a bull's notion about triathlons, so I'm just wondering how the whole thing works. Can I tootle off on my bike during the swim leg to keep myself warmed up or do I have to keep my bike in the transition area and do the bike leg from a cold start?

Never done a relay (wussie ;) ) but during Tri's the bikes are all held in transition areas (usually just railings people have their bikes attached to).

I doubt for the relay you'll be allowed outside them during the swim leg as there are clear entry/exit mats (often with timing chips readers).

Just bring the rollers into the transition area.

    Can you do that?

Two bikes. Now there's an idea.

Anyone know what most people do in teams for a warm up?

I've done the Schull sprint tri by relay last year and doing it again this year.

Near as i know, the other team members can move around but cant move the bikes from the transition area during the swim and the bike has to be at it's place on the railing/stand when the swimmer comes out of the drink/into the transition area. I think. Don't quote me on it though

Thanks Che. Good to know I don't have to sit in there at least. Perhaps rollers and another bike in the carpark might be the best move. Of course I could be taking this all too seriously and get a severe slagging from colleagues for bringing all this gear. Still, there are three teams from work going in and I'm determined that ours wins.

No would be the simple answer, your bike has to be racked and there isn't a lot of space in there, you would be in everyone elses way on rollers. Two bikes would be the better idea. Transition area last year:

There is generally a fair mix of people doing these things, people do them on MTBs and all sorts of bikes, for a lot it is a "do to complete" rather than looking for a good time etc.

@Tonto- I think you should give serious consideration to purchasing a time trial bike for this event.

Much and all as I'd like to own one, I couldn't really justify it at present. This tri, along with the club league, means it would only get around four runs every year. Some day though I may get one of those Planet X TT frames and build it up.

You'd be training on it also, presumably.

That doesn't sound like winner talk to me. When the bike split times are published do you want to be narrowly beaten by some... some... triathlete simply because of their aero advantage.

No self respecting race cyclist could ever live that down.

it's worse than being beaten on, say an alpine climb by a fat b**tard :)

That's true, but not a whole heap either given the minimal amount of TTs in the year.

I don't think you'll be able to goad me into getting a TT bike at present. When my new gaff is done I'll have more space for bikes, so maybe then.
