Windows cannot load the locally stored profile

Hoping someone can help me out...

I logged on to my laptop this morning and got this message...

Windows cannot load the locally stored profile: Insufficient security rights or a corrupted local file. Windows has logged you in with a temporary profile any setting you make will not be saved. DETAIL: Error performing inpage operation

Then I was logged on with a temporary profile.

To cut a long story short I've looked up other sites including the Microsoft support site and I've gotten to the point of creating a new user profile and attempted to copy the files from the one that can't be opened to the new one. However when I attempt to do this by going to My Computer... Properties... Advanced... User names and eventually click the copy button a message comes up saying access denied

So I'm at my whits ends as to what to do about it now because I have years of photos saved on my laptop and hoping that they're not all gone!! eek.gif

    Any advice??

Also I can't even open it in safe mode.. it says access is denied!

    Thanks in advance

most likely one of the registry files is corrupt

option a) use system restore to back and see if that works

option b) right click on the profile and in properties into security and give yourself permissions
if it still denies then somewhere in advanced is the option to take ownership and then apply security settings again

unless the system crashed recently its; probably a good idea to check the HDD is ok with a diagnostic or HDTUNE also check for malware too

Ok thanks. Not too well up on all this kinda thing so will look it up bit by bit and see where it leads me.

What do you think the chances of being able to save the pictures and music are? It's just so frustrating!!

    Thanks again for advice!

    Create a new administrative user.

    Log in as that user.

Navigate to C:\Documents and Settings and find the folder with your username on it.

    Rename this folder.

Log off and login with your usual profile.
    Log off again.
Log in as the other admin

Copy the files you want to keep for the renamed folder to your new username folder in "C:\Documents and Settings"

Log off and log in again.

    Should work fine :)
