I posted it in the pregnancy thread but maybe it would be better having a thread of its own. Basically what i want to know is, are they worth it? My mate got it done the other day and was amazed that he saw his new daughter yawning 13 weeks before she is born. The girlfriend is saying that the money would be better spent on other things, im not too sure what as we have bought the buggy, moses basket, changing united and cot already.

If its just a waste of money then i will just forget about it, but if its worth it ill book the appointment and surprise her with it.

I can't really answer your question because I haven't had mine yet. How far along is your gf? I've booked one for the 2nd May. I can't wait. My boyfriend thought I was completely mad to be booking it but he's changed his mind since we had our 20 week scan this morning and it was crap.
If you can afford it then I'd do. If money is tight and it really could be used for something else then I'd probably leave it off. With me, the money isn't a huge issue so I went ahead and booked it.
Any reports I've heard on it have said that it is a really cool experience and worth it so hopefully that's the case.

Btw there are plenty of videos on youtube that will show you what you can expect so you can make up your own mind.

Neighbours had it done and it was pretty cool looking at the video and pics. I think it is worth it on your first as you are probably more anxious to see the baby but don't think I'll be having it done myself as I'm on my 3rd and happy enough to meet baby when he or she arrives. Although....if my husband surprised me with a trip for one I would be delighted!

Hi, just a quick note on the issue. Try and get it done around 23 -28 weeks as there is still plenty of room inside that the baby can move around in. I'm not getting it done cause I cant justify the price at the moment besides the pics sort of freak me out a little.

Was it really that good? Where'd you get it done?

I'd say if you can afford it - do it!

I had simple photos from scan and I'm happy. On my first scan I got baby's profile, face and full body... I was very happy to be introduced to my baby...:) and good job to rotunda staff who printed out for me so nice photo!

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but do 3D scans give away the sex of the baby? I seen one on TV before, I wasn't paying that much attention, but I remember being amazed at how clear everything was.

As far as I know, and I'm not having mine until next week, if you don't want to know the sex of the baby they'll hide it from you.

I'm getting mine done on 21st May and can't wait! Any opportunity to get a glimpse of how your baby is doing in the womb is amazing.

At the moment, Ultrasound Dimensions (in Blackrock) do the 3D/4D scans for €195. It includes a dvd & pics.

It's up to the individual whether they feel it's worth it to pay that amount but I am so looking forward to it. It will definitely be worth it in my opinion!:)

How come they are so cheap? Most people told us they were €300 but maybe the price has come down in the recession.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 506 ✭✭✭gowayouttadat

Mine is 175, the girl said they're normally 200 but had some special offer on. Maybe it's due to the recession or just because they're getting more popular they can afford to reduce the price. I suppose as with all new technology it normally starts off expensive and the price comes down the longer it's on the market.

Hmm not sure, maybe it has? That's their set price (not a special offer). And because we went there early on for a scan, they will give us 20% off the 3D/4D scan. Think this applies to all return visits on the same pregnancy so price will work out even lower again for us which is great! ;)

Had mine today! We're having a boy... woohoo! Delighted, it's what I wanted.

Baby was being very uncooperative at the start and had was lying face down so had to for a walk. Second time round we got some nice pics and the dvd is very good! Definitely worth it. Still can't believe we're having a boy :)

Ah, congratulations!!! Really happy for you x

Thanks girls! Feels so weird knowing that it's definitely a boy. My dad really doesn't want to know beforehand so we decided we'd keep it a secret from everyone. I feel like bursting and telling people but I can't. I want to make it special for my dad.

I'm having some fun with my boyfriends brother. He really wants to know whether it's a boy or girl but I won't tell him. I sent him on the pics and he says he's guessed it's a boy. I'm not confirming or denying anything till August lol

Lol... they'll just have to wait so!

Was it really clear/obvious from the scan what the sex is? Just curious to know as I'm very tempted to find out the sex at my scan in a couple of weeks!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 506 ✭✭✭gowayouttadat

Our was very obvious! No disputing the fact that it's a boy, if you know what I mean :)
When we went in the first time she had a look and said she couldn't tell because the chord was between the legs. We had to go out and wait a while then and after the baby moved she was able to see it very clearly. Totally depends on the way the baby is lying. Even when she went looking for it the 2nd time she didn't think she'd be able to see it because his bum was in the way! If you don't want to know you can definitely get away without finding out because they really do have to go looking for it.

Cool, thanks for the info. I'd love to find out the sex but I have this fear that they might get it wrong and then I'll be all confused when the baby arrives being the opposite sex than what I'd been told :( Just a little scared that I'd find it hard to bond (initially) if that happened as I'd be so used to the idea of having the other sex...

Although I'm sure all that would fly out the window when the baby is in my arms anyways! If I have a healthy baby I will be over the moon no matter what! :)

Or you could be like me and when the baby was put beside me and I was told it was a girl, I said "But... I wanted a boy..."

    My poor daughter

    Lol!

    I'm probably just being silly. i know I won't be disappointed as I haven't got a preference - I'm just curious.............. and impatient :p

It's a strange decision to make! I was adamant at the start that I didn't want to know beforehand. I actually couldn't understand why people wouldn't want a surprise. I did a total u-turn over the last few months though! And I was so impatient too. I wanted to find out at the 20 week scan but we weren't given the option and I've literally been counting down the days to today.

And no doubt you'll be as happy as larry as long as the baby is fit and healthy Caroline.

Has anyone had their scan around the 25 week mark? I rang up to book one today and they offered me a scan for when I'm 27 weeks, but I'm going to the hospital a couple of days beforehand and I was hoping to spread them out a bit. They can't fit me in when I'm 26 weeks, I can get one at 25 weeks but the girl on the phone said they prefer to do it between 26 and 29 weeks. I booked it for 28 weeks, but I'm wondering if I should change it for 25 weeks. I want to get it done asap but I don't want it to be a waste of time either.

We got ours at 25 weeks(jesus, 10 weeks have flown). It was brilliant

I got mine done at 24 weeks and it was great. When I was booking it the girl said they do them from 22 weeks onwards but recommend getting it done from 24 weeks.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 114 ✭✭**Caroline**

    Hi Pigletlover,:)

I got mine done at 28 weeks and it was amazing! But I'm sure (like Melion said) that 25 weeks would be every bit as good for a 3D scan. I've heard of plenty of people getting them done before the 27/28 week mark and they were delighted with the results.;)

I'd say the clinic were just trying to cover themselves as they probably get "best" results within the weeks they reccommended. But I think most of the clinics who do the 3D scans have a "satisfaction guaranteed" policy - it means that if they don't get some decent pics of your baby, then they won't charge you for the scan.

We just got our one done today (second time of asking!) in Blackrock. We're 26.5 weeks and I can truly say it is mesmerising! The place that does it had us booked in last Sunday but the baby was face down and no matter how much coke we gave it, the baby just was too comfortable to play ball. They gave us the choice to take what they had or to come back. We went back today. Great decision!

For those interested, it was impossible from the scan they did to tell whether the baby is a boy or girl so although we signed a disclaimer beforehand.

I'm going back in now to watch the DVD again! Best €195 we spent this year!

Glad it went well spiderman! Our little fella was face down for a while when we got ours done. Luckily a bit of a walk and a can of coke sorted him out and he co-operated in the end. Must have been kind of disappointing for ye the first time around, glad it worked out. I loved the dvd too :D

We had our 3D scan yesterday in Blackrock, my wife is at 30-31 weeks and its our first child and we elected not to find out the sex.

Someone said to me a while back, theres a moment during the pregnancy when you realize youre actually going to be a father, you realize its actually happening and it really sinks in.

I had presumed it had come and gone with the earlier scans, I thought "yeah Im ready for this, no problem, be the Daddy, be supportive ". Yesterday evening I was stunned to silence, talk about "shock and awe". Whilst watching the scan and seeing the baby face appear , the hands legs and feet I was just overcome by the whole thing. I didnt let on to my wife but it was a real lump in the throat moment....gonna be tough to keep it together come show time:eek:

Ahh that's so sweet Trev M :D... Congrats!

It really does make it all the more real when you see such a clear image of your little one on the screen ;) I defo think 3D scans are money well spent! :):)

And congratulations to your good self Caroline.
