Satnav Speed Vs. Speedometer Speed

Meant to post this some time ago.

Was driving through England in a van last year with a broken speedo so was using the SatNav. On the way back home my brother was following in a mini he was bringing over and he complained is was over the speed limit according to his speedo but the satnav said 100kph/60ishmph.

Same in parents car, 100kph on the satnav is over 100kph on the speedo, close but still not 100.

Which is more accurate? Satnav? Is the speedo displaying slower because they are always a little of calibration?

What about speed cameras, or the garda with their guns, how are they calibrated? If im travelling at 100kph (satnav) the speedo is over 100kph, could this lead to a speeding fine?

    Just something I've been wondering.

I think the speedo tends to show a % or two faster then you're actually going, to ensure you're sticking to the limits. GPS speed is more accurate but not perfectly accurate due to the shape of the earth.

    Thats basically it really.

Speedos overstate your speed to legally cover the car manufacturers' arses in the case of some muppets using the speedo being wrong as a defence against speeding charges.

You get a better reading with a 3d GPS as opposed to a 2d one as it takes inclines etc into account...but otherwise what ^^^^^^^^^^ said

I've never seen a GPS that doesn't calculate altitude (inaccurately..).

why would you consider someone using that defence a muppet?
