    Just a quick question.

    I've come across a netopia router where the internet light goes red intermittently. Can someone tell me if this is more likely an eircom fault, or a fault with the router itself? (perhaps it is something else) It has only started happening yday.

    Cheers

    Well it should be on constantly so something is causing your connection to drop. Do you ever notice the DSL light starting to flashing randomly and then go solid?

    There is interference on line , or as my case some one screw up at eircom. call them on 1890260260 and log a fault, but be advised it will take 3-5 days to get solved.

    It happens on mine every once in a while. For instance, it happened yesterday and one day last week. It seems to happen once a week, or once every other week. The funny thing is that Internet connectivity isn't a problem, e.g. web browsing, downloading from Usenet etc, when the red light comes on, which I think is the DSL light, so it is weird it still works.

    A simple power off and on rectifies the red light, but I am at a loss as to why it happens at all and I haven’t bothered looking too much into it.

    Just wanna see if it is the box or eircom at fault.

    Hi,
    I have a netopia router too. If you see the internet light going red your best bet is to run the internal diagnostics so you can see where the problem is and have more information when logging a call with Eircom.

    Open your browser and type the router ip address in to the address bar (default is 192.168.1.254). If you have chanced the default ip and are unsure what it is do the following:

    click Start->run
    type "cmd" in to the dialogue box,(without " ")
    you should get a command prompt.
    Type "ipconfig" and then press return
    the default gateway address listed should be your router's ip address.

    Sample Ipconfig output:
    Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection 3:

    Media State . . . . . . . . . . . : Media disconnected

    Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection 2:

    Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
    IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.1
    Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0
    Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.1.254

    when you open the routers config page

    click Troubleshoot->Diagnostics->Run Full Diagnostics

    The results from a working router are as follows

    DSL Pass
    ATM Pass
    Ethernet Pass
    PPPoE Pass
    Authentication Pass
    IP Pass

    when the red light is flashing one or more of these will fail. From my experience if they are all failing you are losing "DSL Sync" and it may be a line problem. If PPPOE, authentication or IP are failing it is likely to be an ISP problem.

    Hope this helps,
    Esskay.

    Great, Ill give the diagnostics a run if it goes down again. Should help when dealing with Eircom.

    Definately seems like an interference issue like mach1982 already mentioned. How many phones points have you in the house? Is everything correctly filtered? Do you have Sky or a monitored house alarm connected to the phone?

    There are three points in the house. I do have sky and now that you mention it there is filter on the line serving the netopia box. I'll whip it on and see the craic.Thanks
